What is health information exchange (HIE)? • HIE is the electronic movement of health-related data and information among organizations according to agreed standards, protocols and other criteria • The term refers to the process of reliable and interoperable electronic health-related information sharing conducted in a manner that protects the confidentiality, privacy, and security of the information • HIE supports the sharing of health-related information to facilitate coordinated care through the utilization of EHRs. • HIE provides key information to individuals to promote health and wellness through population of PHRs, and can be used to support research, public health, emergency response, and quality improvement.

  3. What are the benefits of HIE? For patients . . . • Improves privacy and security of personal health and medical information • Reduces likelihood of medical errors due to incomplete or inaccurate information • Improves doctor-patient communication and coordination of care among providers • Eliminates need for hand-carried and faxed transmission of health care records • Improves diagnosis and reduces orders for duplicate test and procedures • Empowers patients to take personal responsibility for their health care

For providers . . . • Improves privacy and security of patient health and medical information • Improves quality of care, timeliness, and patient safety and outcomes • Increases convenience and workflow efficiency • Improves diagnosis and reduces orders for duplicate test and procedures • Enhances communication among hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies and referring physicians • Improves access to test results and referral consultations

  8. Ken Lawonn – Nebraska Health Information Exchange • Nebraska’s largest eHealth network • NeHII is exchanging laboratory, radiology, and clinical documentation information statewide • Insurance eligibility information • e-Prescribing • Basic, web-based electronic medical record

Jan Root – Utah Health Information Network • Access to clinical information from multiple sources that include hospitals, reference labs, the Utah Department of Health, and other clinicians • Electronic delivery of ordered reports • Connects existing EMRs, which allow records to be received and displayed in existing systems • Accommodates electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) and refills, which are sent and requested electronically • Provides access to on-line EMR functionality • Assists in achieving “meaningful use” criteria

Robert Steffel - HealthBridge • HealthBridge represents nearly 95% of the hospital sector activity in the Cincinnati region • HealthBridge provides connectivity for more than 28 hospitals, 5500 physician users, 17 local health departments,  700 physician offices and clinics, as well as nursing homes, independent labs, radiology centers and others in its healthcare region • Through its clinical messaging system, HealthBridge delivers approximately 3 million clinical messages (laboratory, radiology, transcription and ADT) to more than 5500 physicians each month
