AVID Excel: Accelerating Language Acquisition for Long-Term ELL Students

AVID Excel aims to interrupt the long-term ELL status of students, enhance their language acquisition, and prepare them for AVID and college prep coursework. This program focuses on academic language building using AVID strategies in combination with ELL support in math and science.

  1. AVID Excel Goal To interrupt students’ path to long-term ELL status, accelerate their language acquisition, and put them on the path to AVID and college preparatory coursework

Criteria for selecting 6thGrade Candidates for AVID Excel in 7th GradeUS Schools: 4 years or more (as of 6th grade)—on the way to long-term ELL status English Language Proficiency Exam: Overall intermediate and early advanced ELA Standards Test: Below proficient (basic level) College Aspirations: Interested in going to college; desire to achieve ELA Courses: Usually scheduled for general ed. ELA courses (vs. ELD/ ESL/ESOL)

  3. AVID’s ELCR Components: • AVID Excel • Supporting ELLs in Math & Supporting ELLs in Science Path Trainings • ELL Write Path book & training • Infusion of AVID into ELD courses • Infusion of ELL strategies into the AVID curriculum

  4. KEY FOCUS:Academic language building with AVID strategies for support AVID Excel is NOT: • An “AVID for ELL students class” because: • It is not part of AVID certification • And the primary focus is LANGUAGE first

San Jacinto Unified School District’s AVID Excel Program History • 6 Grade Students selected in March 2012 at both Middle Schools • Program Started in the Summer of 2012 • In 2012-13 one 7th Grade class finished the school year. • Difficulties at 1 site with staff and with the retention of students in the program. • In 2013-14 one site has a 7th grade class and the other has a 7th and 8th grade class.

San Jacinto Unified School District’s AVID Excel Program Data The current cohort of 8th graders that were in AVID Excel during 7th grade 2012-13 for one full year have shown the following growth: • ELA-CST 2010-11 Average Scores = 33.3% were at 350 or higher • ELA-CST 2011-12 Average Scores = 38.1% were at 350 or higher • ELA-CST 2012-13 Average Scores = *57.2% were at 350 or higher * After 1 year in AVID Excel

San Jacinto Unified School District’s AVID Excel Program Data The current cohort of 8thgraders that were in AVID Excel during 7th grade 2012-13 for one full year have shown the following growth: • 6th Grade Bench Mark Assessments Growth from BOY to Q3 during 2011-12 = 5.2% Growth (No AVID Excel) • 7thGrade Bench Mark Assessments Growth from BOY to Q3 during 2012-13 = 25% Growth (With AVID Excel)
