  5. The Revolution • In the Middle Ages the church provided all knowledge. • Thinkers like Bacon and Descartes instead stressed the importance of observation to figure out how the world works. • This would then be followed by experiments.

  6. The Truth Hurts • The problem is that this challenged many long held beliefs which angered the church. • “Take the red pill and I’ll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes…”

  8. Instead of just accepting anything the Church said people used the scientific method: • Hypothesize (have an idea) • Observe (watch nature to see what happens) • Experiment (test it out)

  15. So… • Copernicus wrote a book about his theory. • He was afraid of the punishment he might get from the church if he published it. • He was convinced to publish it anyway and the church didn’t like it.
