Role of Modeling • Modeling (using both analytical or simulative solution) is an important approach (and set of techniques) for the analysis and evaluation of system dependability and is useful in many phases of system lifecycle • Modeling (used by itself provides cheap support for design refinement and preliminary analyses of dependability • Modeling used together with controlled experiments and field measurements provides a promising approach to system evaluation and benchmarking • Modeling can be used also at run time as a support for taking dynamic decisions (fault tolerance) AB Pisa, 25-27/11/02, Workshops on & 3

  4. Modeling at design time • Most traditional usage. Still there are many research issues to address: • Need for automatic/methodological model construction • Integration with development tools • Enlargement of the set of systems that can be satisfactorily modeled and analysed • Relaxation of assumptions  fundamental research on stochastic processes • Enlargement of the size of the systems: • Efficient representation and algorithms • Modular solution (not just modular modeling) AB Pisa, 25-27/11/02, Workshops on & 4

Modeling combined with experimental activities • Modeling used together with controlled experiments and field measurements provides a promising approach to system validation and benchmarking • Need for deeper understanding of evaluation and validation methodologies and proper role for the different approaches • Need to study integration with fault injection and field measurements to benefit and get benefit from these activities. i.e. to enrich and consolidate jean transparency on cross fertilization. Run time usage • Unpredictability and dynamicity of the new environments • Scarce control and knowledge of the entire (large scale) distributed system or infrastructure • Desire of adaptability and flexibility Open the scene for system organization where modeling can play an important supporting role for the on-line decisions to be taken as a reaction to a too large variety of events to be considered a-priori Models to be solved on-line using field data to forecast the effects of possible alternative actions • This kind of usage opens a new perspective for modeling approaches and related tools!!!
