  3. Please address using bulleted phrases, organized as you see fit, the main points Jared Diamond conveyed about Easter Island in this chapter In other words, what was the chapter about ?!? Feel free to use illustrations, either from the book, included here for convenience or from another source. If from another source, please use proper attribution Do your best to engage the class in a discussion, which you will lead! We are not asking you to stand up and speak to the audience for a straight 45 min segment … rather, we are asking you to lead a discussion  I think it works best if you ask the students first to answer the question, then you work in a bulleted slide with your thoughts about what the chapter was about. Feel free to make liberal use of illustrations.

  4. Great to ask the students: something new they learned upon reading this chapter? Be specific if you can … i.e., nearly all of us have heard of Easter Island, but what about Easter Island was new upon reading this chapter? Be prepared with your own answer, presented as bulleted phrases (maybe even with an illustration), but let the students discuss first (of course under your leadership) before giving them your answer.

  5. Try to describe something stated in this chapter that you might challenge, should you be in a debate about Easter Island and the chapter you have just read is the opening argument from the other side. I know this will be hard for some … but one of the goals of this class is to encourage critical thought, even regarding a chapter written by an esteemed Pulitzer Prize winning author. If I did not have high regard for Jared Diamond, we would not be using his book in this class. But no one’s scholarly work, even that of Jared Diamond, is beyond reproach. This part of the presentation should be especially ripe for discussion!

  6. Finally, describe how the history of the Easter Island may be applicable to the situation faced by the world’s population may face, with respect to global warming.

  7. Feel free to alter, ad lib, change in any way you’d like provided the topic is Easter Island and the material mainly draws upon the reading. You have 45 mins to use as you see fit! Use the maps and figures as you see fit. If you don’t use, you are welcome to delete from the PPT file you provide. And, you can almost certainly easily find better, color figures on line. Good luck!
