A Bit of History • Properties of ash discovered by the Romans • Used in the construction of the Pantheon in Rome, 27 B.C. and 1 A.D.
Hydration of PFA PFA reacts with the lime produced by the hydration of cement to give more hydration products - reducing the voids and lowering the permeability.
Ash Beneficiation Critical • Need to guarantee ash quality and availability for cementitious markets which means <7% LOI • Ash LOI from the station can vary considerably from 5% to >20%! • Silo storage to capture low LOI ash not sufficient to guarantee a service throughout the year • Need to be Independent of the Station • Legislation leading to low NOX burners will tend to increase LOI’s in Ash in future

Pfa as a fill material ... • Used as a load bearing fill or for landscaping. • Lightweight - reduces the load on weak ground. • Self hardening - offers considerable advantages over natural clays and granular materials. • Low permeability - sheds rain water naturally which reduces leaching. • Can be mixed with lime - gives higher strengths because of the pozzolanic reaction. • Suitable for use as a road sub base which can be trafficked straight away.
PFA for grouting ... • PFA when mixed with cement and/or lime is used for grouting fissures, voids and cavities: • in redundant mine workings, caverns, etc. • in redundant pipework systems, e.g. sewers. • for filling behind tunnel linings. • used in gunite applications.
Using PFA & FBA in lightweight concrete blocks ... • Pfa used in two ways: • As a primary material in aerated concrete blocks • As a fine filler material in lightweight concrete blocks • FBA uses as a lightweight aggregate in lightweight blocks
PFA in concretes • PFA is a pozzolana • Pozzolanas were used by the Romans to build many buildings, for example the Pantheon. • This means it reacts with lime to form silicate hydrates - these hydrates give concrete strength and durability. • Classified PFA reduces the water content of a concrete - reducing permeability. • PFA improves the sulphate resistance and reduces the risk of alkali silica reaction • It reduces the heat of hydration compared to Portland Cement • PFA is supplied to BS3892 Part 1 and EN450
R &D: New Uses for Ash • Sustainable roads project – with Heriot-Watt University& Edinburgh City Council • Envirocem – waste stabilisation • Stone Paving System – new Bedding Mortar Cement and Joint Filling Grout, with latex • Oil well linings for sector in Alaska and Latin America • Project with Strathclyde University on use of ash to bind harbour contaminants like tributyl tin

Partnerships for Sustainability • Industry, government and regulators partnerships critical for development of sustainable materials • Regulators must work with industry to address barriers to sustainable development • Legal interpretations of EU Directives is: – Costly for industry and the tax payer – Common sense and sustainability objectives suffer Dialogue and a joint approach to develop solutions is the best way forward
