How to Make Memory Foam Pillows Last Longer

Memory foam pillows are well worth the investment, providing superior support by molding to the shape of your head and neck. Over time, however, they can start to break down, losing their shape, support, and even start to smell if not well maintained. To keep your memory foam pillow delivering the restful sleep it promises, it's well worth taking a little extra care.<br>

  1. How to Extend the Life of Memory Foam Pillows: Important Tips for Durability and Comfort • Memory foam pillows are well worth the investment, providing superior support by molding to the shape of your head and neck. Over time, however, they can start to break down, losing their shape, support, and even start to smell if not well maintained. To keep your memory foam pillow delivering the restful sleep it promises, it's well worth taking a little extra care. • In this blog, we'll see how you can extend the life of your memory foam pillow, keeping it fresh, supportive, and comfortable for years to come.

  2. 1. Use a Pillowcase and Protector • The easiest and best method to keep your memory foam pillow safe is to always cover it with a pillowcase. A pillowcase serves as a shield, safeguarding your pillow from sweat, oils, dust, and allergens. By keeping your pillowcase clean (washing it every 1-2 weeks), you minimize the amount of grime that may penetrate into the foam, causing it to degrade early. • For extra protection, use a pillow protector. These zippered pillow covers keep your pillow safe from moisture, dust mites, and allergens, while allowing the pillow to breathe. Find a breathable and waterproof protector, as this will keep your pillow dry and fresh without affecting comfort.

  3. 2. Wash Pillowcases Regularly • Even if you use a pillow protector, the pillowcase you sleep on can still accumulate oils, sweat, and dirt over time. It’s a good idea to wash your pillowcase every 1-2 weeks to remove these residues and keep your pillow clean. A clean pillowcase also helps avoid transferring bacteria or allergens back onto the memory foam. • When cleaning your pillowcase, use a mild detergent and do not use fabric softener, which will leave a residue on the pillow that can deteriorate its fabric over time.

  4. 3. Spot Clean the Pillow, Don't Soak It • Memory foam is very sensitive to water, therefore you should never submerge it in water at all. Letting the pillow soak can compromise the structure of the foam, make it become moldy or develop bad smells. Instead, apply a spot cleaning technique for any stains or spills: • Prepare a Cleaning Solution: Combine warm water with a small amount of mild detergent. You may add a bit of baking soda as a deodorizer. • Blot Stains: Wring out a soft cloth or sponge in the solution and gently blot the stained area. Rubbing will destroy the foam. • Dry Carefully: Following cleaning, position the pillow in good air flow and allow it to air dry completely. Don't use heat sources such as hair dryers or radiators to accelerate the drying process since heat can destroy the foam.

  5. 4. Fluff and Turn the Pillow Frequently • Memory foam pillows may become flat or misshapen after a while of use. Fluffing and turning your pillow every other week or two can redistribute the foam and refresh its shape. Fluff your pillow by squishing and massaging it softly with your palms, and turn it 180 degrees so both sides and areas are used fairly. • This easy maintenance routine will make sure that the pillow will still support your neck and head in an even manner, enhancing the overall comfort and prolonging its lifespan.

  6. 5. Stay Away from Excessive Heat and Sunlight • Heat-sensitivity of the memory foam: The foam becomes broken, lost elasticity, and forms cracks with direct exposure to the sun and higher temperatures over an extended time period. It's advisable not to leave it directly exposed in the sun, in extreme heating spots such as a radiator, air heater vent, or even space heater. • If your pillow is damp or needs to be washed, it is best to allow it to dry naturally in a cool, dry area. Too much heat may also make the foam too soft, which could weaken its ability to support your head and neck properly.

  7. 6. Keep Your Pillow Clean and Dust-Free • With time, dust and debris may accumulate within the pillow and alter its form, leading it to lose shape. Vacuuming the exterior surface of your memory foam pillow regularly, say every few weeks, can be done to get rid of dust, dirt, and pet hair that may have gained entry within. • Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to gently clean the pillow. This will lift any dust or debris trapped in the foam without causing damage. • 7. Use a Proper Sleeping Position • One of the best ways to extend the life of your memory foam pillow is by using it properly. Avoid placing excessive pressure on the pillow by sleeping in awkward positions. For example, sleeping on your stomach can cause the pillow to compress unevenly, leading to flattening or loss of shape.

  8. 8. Switch between several pillows • If you sleep on your memory foam pillow night after night, it's going to take a beating eventually. Instead of placing wear evenly and letting your pillow rest, try alternating with two or more pillows. This allows each pillow some time to regain its form and reduces the constant stress to one pillow. • Having a spare pillow also enables you to clean and maintain one pillow while continuing to have a comfortable, supportive pillow for your evening sleep.
