What is the Canadian Standard for Cyber security?

The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), which regulates the storage and protection of personal data, has been amended by the Digital Privacy Act. By detecting possible flaws and creating measures to reduce risks, cyber security in Canada aids organizations in staying ahead of these attacks.

  1. What is the Canadian standard for cyber security? Canadian Standard for cyber security: Cyber security standards of Canada as well as Cybersecurity laws and regulations have made decent progress since the Digital Privacy Act came into effect in 2018. The Digital Privacy Act is an amendment to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), through which the protection and storage of personal data are governed. While compared to the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Digital Privacy Act regulations may put up significant penalties on Canadian businesses, if they do not properly report any breaches and safeguard personal data that occur to the affected individuals. According to research conducted by a firm, approximately 65% of data breach victims have lost trust in the organization because of a security breach. These reputational and financial repercussions are one of the causes because of which these regulations and laws are put in place so that businesses and consumers can be protected with sensitive data.

  2. Canada's Cybersecurity Landscape: There are three provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec) that have almost the same legislative requirements with different levels of security requirements. In Canada, the cybersecurity and data protection aspects are governed by a complex regulatory and legal framework. if this framework is not clearly understood and active steps are not taken to reduce risks, then that particular Canadian organization can have financial and legal consequences. Therefore, those organizations working within the confines of Canada should clearly understand this rapidly evolving area of governance and law. Canadian organizational decision-making would get impacted by these sources of governance and law, with respect to the development of a plan, so that cybersecurity risks can be addressed accordingly. An audit should be conducted by the Canadian organizations of their existing cybersecurity status. Following are a few key points that need to be evaluated: What is running on their networks and systems What and who is connected to their networks and systems The technology should be put in place so that most breaches can be prevented, breaches that do not occur can be detected and the damage of such breaches (e.g., automatic shutdown when there is a detection of data leaks) can be minimized.
