  1. Announcing a new method of HIV testing: the planning of robust home testing for HIV combined with internet counseling Jannie van der Helm, Freke Zuure, Han Fennema, Udi Davidovich, Maria Prins on behalf of the HIVTest@Home study group Public Health Service Amsterdam

  2. HIVTest@Home project Background and Aim project • Despite test facilities, estimates indicate that 40% of HIV infections in the Netherlands are undiagnosed (van Veen et al AIDS 2011) • Self tests for HIV have become available which allow individuals to test at home • Concerns about test quality, lack of counseling and medical follow-up • HIVTest@Home project: to develop and evaluate a service that provides reliable HIV self tests using oral fluid in combination with internet counseling for MSM and migrants

  3. HIVTest@Home project Procedure • A website and logistic infrastructure will be developed • Provides online intake to assess eligibility for using the service • Regular testing facilities will be advised for integrated STI/HIV testing • Clients who do not opt for regular testing will be informed on pros and cons of home testing and directed to our webshop to buy an HIV self test • Self test will be delivered discretely, and online pre-test counseling is offered via the project’s website • Website will guide the individual through all the steps of testing • Online post-test counseling, and referral to appropriate care • Low threshold contact options with health care professionals are offered throughout the procedure

  4. HIVTest@Home project Planning • The service will be launched in 2013, accompanied by a media campaign • We aim to distribute 2,000 tests within a 12-month period • Feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of the service in identifying undiagnosed HIV infections will be evaluated using • data collected online from participants, web statistics, interviews with participants, and clinical follow-up data • If feasible and effective this new method can create another reliable low-threshold testing option for different risk populations
