  1. QOD8/22/11 Directions: Copy the questions below into your notebook. At the end of class, answer the questions based on our discussions. How do scientific investigations begin? What goes into forming a hypothesis? What is the difference between a theory and a scientific law? What are the two types of observations? Give an example of each.

  2. QOD8/23/11 Directions: Copy the questions below into your notebook. At the end of class, answer the questions based on our discussions. How do you identify independent and dependent variables? What are controls? What is the purpose of a conclusion? What is “error analysis?”

  3. QOD8/24/11 Why are procedures written BEFORE you start a lab? What should be included in the analysis section of a lab report? What kind of data should you collect for your results? Why? How is this lab relevant to your life?

  4. QOD8/25/11 List 5 possible sources of error in the Jell-o lab. List 5 constants in your lab setup. What was your control group? Why did you need to include a control? Why did you use three petri dishes?

  5. QOD8/26/11 What safety precautions did you take during the lab? How would you improve this lab? What can you do to prepare for the Unit 1 Test on Wednesday?

  6. QOD – 8/29/11 • What is the difference between science and technology? • What are some common constraints (at least 3) when designing a solution to a problem? • Why is it important to plan your design before you start building?

  7. QOD – 8/30/11 Answer questions 1-3 on page 14. On your paper, identify the independent and dependent variables, and list 3 constants in each experiment. Practice Test on your desk to be checked!

  8. QOD – 8/31/11 • What are the SI units for length, mass and volume? • If we describe an experiment as a relationship between “cause” and “effect,” what would the dependent variable be? • What is the purpose of constants in a scientific investigation?

  9. QOD – 9/1/11 • What is the purpose of a lab report? • What should be included in the analysis section of the lab report? (List at least 4 things!) • What are some characteristics of a good graph?

  10. 90-second Naturalist QOD – 9/2/11 Directions: Copy down the topic and air date. I will play a clip of “90-second Naturalist.” Listen to the clip, then write a one-paragraph summary/reflection based on the topic. Topic: Small Things Rule The World Air Date: Tuesday, August 02, 2011

  11. QOD9/7/11 90-second Naturalist Topic: Bat Metabolism Air Date: August 29, 2011

  12. QOD9/9/2011 90-second Naturalist Topic: Plants are a Problem Air Date: June 8, 2010

  13. QOD9/12/11 • Climate Change Report: Life In 2050 • Copy the questions below to answer after watching the video clip. • What are some impacts we may see as global temperatures increase? • What are your opinions about climate change? Should we care? • How are humans contributing to global warming? (Hint: carbon cycle)

  14. QOD9/13/11 • Climate Change Report: Pollution and Health • Copy the questions below to answer after watching the video clip. • How is climate change “killing people?” • What is the main cause of respiratory and cardiovascular issues in San Diego? • How is climate change linked to mosquito-carried illnesses?

  15. QOD9/14/11 What are your plans for the Upcountry Discoveries Project? (When?, Where?, What will you take pictures of?, What kind of project will you make?)

  16. QOD9/15/11 What are the 7 levels of classification IN ORDER? What are the main stages of the nitrogen cycle? Explain the process of primary succession.

  17. QOD9/16/11 90-second Naturalist Air Date: September 16, 2011 Topic: Spider Mite Predators Write a 1-paragraph reflection based on the clip.

  18. QOD9/19/11 90-second Naturalist Air Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 Topic: Bullying Boobies

  19. QOD9/20/11 90 second Naturalist Air Date: Thursday, August 04, 2011 Topic: Bird Song Competition

  20. QOD9/22/11 Read the lab description on p. 43, then answer the pre-lab questions (#1-4).

  21. QOD9/23/11 What are the 3 types of symbiotic relationships? Give an example of a density-dependent limiting factor and a density-independent limiting factor. What are the 4 ways population density can change?

  22. QOD9/27/11 Read the quote, then answer the questions. “The price of butter depends on the number of old maids in the area, because old maids keep cats, cats eat mice, mice eradicate bees, bees pollinate clover, cows eat clover, the more clover there is, the less is costs the farmer to produce milk, butter is made from milk, therefore…” --adapted from Charles Darwin Origin of Species: Chapter 3 Identify an herbivore, an omnivore and a carnivore. Identify a producer, a primary consumer and a secondary consumer. Identify an example of mutualism. Identify an autotroph and a heterotroph.

  23. QOD9/28/11 Explain how a population’s carrying capacity can be increased or decreased based on a change in limiting factors. (Be SPECIFIC – give examples)

  24. QOD9/29/11 • What is competitive exclusion? • What happens to the energy as it moves up the food chain? • What is the difference between interspecific and intraspecific competition?

  25. QOD9/30/11 • Look at the Upcountry Discoveries project description on page 51. Make a checklist of everything you need to include in your project.

  26. QOD10/3/11 GOGOMO Draw the table below onto your QOD paper. Fill in as many boxes as you can with things you already know about cells. Then use the GOGOMO method (give one, get one, move on) until your table is full.

  27. QOD10/4/11 What are some functions a cell would need to undergo to stay alive?

  28. QOD10/5/11 • Name 5 organelles and their functions. • After the copy of the DNA leaves the nucleus, how is it used to create a protein, and how does it get transferred to other parts of the cell? • What organelle helps to cleanup the cell?

  29. QOD10/6/11 Answer the pre-lab questions on your egg lab sheet. What do you think will happen when you put your egg in distilled water? What kind of solution is this? What do you think will happen when you put your egg in syrup? What kind of solution is this?

  30. BiologyQOD10/7/11 Draw pictures showing the movement of water molecules in isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic solutions. Why couldn’t the sugar molecules in the corn syrup move into the egg? Was the vinegar able to get into the egg? What does that tell you about the size of vinegar molecules?

  31. BiologyQOD10/10/11 Draw the egg that was in the water solution. Label the inside and outside of the egg with the type of solution (isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic). Draw the egg that was in the syrup solution. Label the inside and outside of the egg with the type of solution (isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic). What would happen to the shriveled egg if we put it in water? Why?

  32. QOD10/11/11 What is a concentration gradient? Draw a picture to help explain. Label your picture above with arrows to show the direction particles would move during passive transport and during active transport. Why do cells need to divide?

  33. QOD10/12/11 • What are two ways that cell division is regulated in healthy cells? • What is the difference between a benign tumor and a malignant tumor? • How do mutations of the proto oncogene and the tumor suppressor gene cause cancer?

  34. QOD10/17/11 • Which stage of the cell cycle does the cell spend most of its time in? • During which phase of the cell cycle does the nucleus disappear? • If a cell has 10 chromosomes, how many chromosomes will each daughter cell have after mitosis?

  35. QOD10/18/11 • Put the levels of organization in the correct order: organ, tissue, organism, cell, organ system • What could happen if the chromosomes did not line up evenly during metaphse? • What type of transport would be required to move the substances below? Water Oxygen Neurotransmitters Sodium Ions (Na+) Glucose
