  4. Program Mission Statement • The Mission of the Football Program is to produce young men who will lead successful and positive lives as adults. We will do this by: • Providing Character Building Opportunities • Delivering Academic Support • Developing Full Athletic Potential • We are going to build a program that our players are proud of. • The goal of the coaching staff is to make each player a better young man, regardless of their contribution on the football field. • We will be more than just X’s and O’s…. We will develop the habit of hard work no matter the situation or adversity #ThePopeWay

  5. Program Goals • Increase numbers at all levels • Continue to develop family atmosphere • Be the model program for other schools/coaches • Prepare players to be GREAT husbands, fathers, employees, citizens • Create an environment where players see the coaches as mentors • Character Development • My Staff’s Development #ThePopeWay

  6. The Pope Way: T.P.W. (Core Values) 1. Family • F.A.M.I.L.Y.- “Forget About Me I Love You” • Be a part of something bigger than yourself 2. Toughness • Tough People Win • Doesn’t require talent • #1 factor in success is GRIT: Courage, resolve, and strength of character • Should be the core of our program • 4 Components of Mental Toughness • Will Power- self-control • Being able to bounce back after a bad play, bad call, or bad loss • Positive Self-Talk- do not listen to yourself, but talk to yourself • Courageous- players who play with guts • “SO WHAT, NEXT PLAY!” #ThePopeWay

  7. 3. Compete • Process of trying to win something that someone else is trying to win • Starts with Energy • You are always competing for a job or someone is competing for yours! • Comes from the top down • Competition brings out the best in us • Don’t be a participant…. Be a competitor • Appreciate Guys making you better • Earn everything…every day • Part of competing with yourself is “You vs. Yesterday” • “FINISH THE DRILL” mentality 4. Discipline • Doing the little things right on a daily basis • 1st step in becoming a leader is taking care of yourself and getting in shape • It’s in our everyday life • Discipline is Self-Control • Clean Locker Rooms is an indicator of discipline #ThePopeWay

  8. 5. Pay Day • Fruits of our Labor • If you plant wheat you will get wheat…. If plant weeds you will get weeds! • Game Goals (Us vs. Them) • Turnovers • Explosive Plays (+12 rushing & +16 passing) • 3rd Down Conversions • QB Sacks & Hurries • Penalty yardage • Rushing Yardage #ThePopeWay

  9. Goals for Each Player • Leaders of the School • High Moral Character Role Models • Prepared physically and mentally • Create and maintain a close family bond #ThePopeWay

  10. Academic Focus • 2 weeks grade checks • Rewards for grades and civic duties • All players remain eligible for spring sports • Study Halls for players not in good academic standing #ThePopeWay

  11. Civic and Community Responsibilities • Thank You notes to teachers and staff members every 2 weeks • Carpool for all Elementary students feeding into Pope HS • Read to Elementary students • Staff wearing jerseys for Friday classes • Support of ALL other students athletes **SET THE TONE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR! #ThePopeWay

  12. Player Expectations Only 1 Rule of Pope HS Football: Represent YOUR FAMILY, Represent YOUR SCHOOL, & Represent YOUR TEAM by your decisions! Through: Actions Social Media Attitude Talk #ThePopeWay

  13. Parent Expectations • Be positive with your son. Let him know how proud you are of him by simply being part of team. • Be loyal to the program and to the coaches. If parents constantly put down the coach or players, how can we expect your son to play for us? • Insist that your son follows TEAM RULES! Athletics are very demanding and coaches are concerned with a player’s activities. In order to get the maximum physical and mental performance, he needs to follow team rules! • Insist on good GRADES! Monitor homework….#1 cause of poor grades is poor homework grade! • Be Positive toward ALL other players and coaches in the program. Best advice I ever learned….Remember there are player’s and coach’s families in the stands that don’t deserve hearing negative things said about their sons or daddy. • All athletes are different…. Don’t compare him to other players or previous players • Have your son see their position coach if they have a problem. Almost all concerns can be handled at this step. Coaches are here because they love coaching and love working with your children. • 24 HOUR RULE…. Give every concerned party 24 hours before you contact them after a game….Let emotions calm. • Lastly, ENJOY YOUR SON’S INVOLVEMENT ON THE TEAM!!! #ThePopeWay
