  1. Gas Furnace: 10 Tips for Maintenance

  2. Regular maintenance will help increase the life of the furnace. Make sure your thermostat is functioning properly.

  3. Check the air filter Air filters need to be changed regularly. Neglecting to change a filter could cause the furnace to produce less heat. Most hardware stores sell furnace air filters.

  4. Monitor the control valve A furnace with a control valve in the off position will not produce heat. If you find your furnace is not producing heat, check the position of the control valve.

  5. Clean your furnace regularly Furnace cleaning should be part of regular maintenance activities. A dirty furnace can decrease efficiency. The filter system, blower and motor need to be kept clean.

  6. Check the tension belt A misaligned tension belt can cause your furnace to run loudly. If the belt appears frayed or worn, replace it with a new one.

  7. Oil the motor A couple of drops of oil should be added to the furnace every season and as needed. Do not over-lubricate.

  8. Clean the vents Vents should be checked regularly for debris and blockages. Blocked ventilation could cause carbon monoxide poisoning, which could be fatal.

  9. Spring shut down At the end of the winter season, gas furnaces need to shut down. This is also a great time to clean the furnace and replace the air filter.
