  1. Gothic Elements in American Literature And EAP’s Style and Technique

  2. Unity of Effect • Poe felt that all artists Should decide on the effect that they want to create in the reader’s emotional response and then proceed to use all of the creative means necessary to provoke that response

  3. EMOTION • Gothic Literature emphasizes the grotesque, the desolate, the horrible, the mysterious, the ghostly and the supernatural • Rejects the rational and the intellect in favor of intuition and emotion • Characters are ruled by their emotions (think Roderick in “The Fall of the House of Usher”)

  4. Setting and Time • Setting is an obscure or unknown place… or it happens at an obscure and unknown time (often in the past… WHY?) • New worlds not associated with the familiar or contemporary places (WHY?)

  5. Characterization • The narrator is anonymous… this places the emphasis on the final effect and emotion created FOR THE READER

  6. Subject Matter • Choose subjects to effect the reader in a manner not encountered in everyday life • Ex. Walking Dead, live burials, • Not common or ordinary • Unexpected endings or events
