  5. Time Zone Overview • Question: Why did we start using different time zones? • Answer: Because, in 1883 railroad companies started using time zones in order to standardize their schedules. Now, it’s time to learn about U.S. Time Zones!

United States Time Zones • The USA is originally divided up into SIX time zones. • Today we’re only going to be looking at the FOUR that cover the Continental United States (the lower 48 states.) • EST, CST, MST, and PST • The reason for this is because the other two time zones are for Alaska (AKST) and Hawaii (HAST). • We will be covering these another day!
