Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning (or other services/functions) • Making our expectations explicit and public; • Setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality (or unit goals/objectives); • Systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards; and • Using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance. • (Adapted from Thomas A. Highlights of the Draft Institutional Assessment Plan • Foundation on pre-existing activity • Program review process in place • Approved General Education Assessment Plan • Good track record regarding assessment of overall educational outcomes • Many University-wide academic programs and non-academic administrative units already engaged in assessment activities

Highlights of the Draft Institutional Assessment Plan • New Procedures – Guidelines – Reporting Protocol • All academic and academic-related University-wide academic programs need to develop and implement formal assessment plans • All non-academic administrative support units that influence the student experience need to develop and implement formal assessment plans • Ideally, all units with implications for the achievement of the University’s mission and goals should develop and implement assessment plans

Highlights of the Draft Institutional Assessment Plan • New Procedures – Guidelines – Reporting Protocol • Vice Presidents/Deans responsible for ensuring that their units develop assessment plans • Vice Presidents/Deans responsible for assessment plan implementation in their units • Assessment plans will be shared with relevant University Senate Councils • All units (academic and non-academic) will prepare annual assessment activity reports for their Vice President or Dean. • Assessment activity reports will be shared with relevant University Senate Councils

Next Steps: • Review the Working Draft • Comments/Suggestions to Bruce Szelest by October 29 • Working Groups to meet within two weeks (by October 26) • Mapping Group • VP reps, Council reps • Group for Linking Assessment with Planning and Budgeting • VP and Dean reps, UPC chair, others? • Meet again 2nd week in November for further discussion?
