Session 1: What is short food supply chain (SFSC) • Article 2 of Regulation (EU) No 1305/2013 on support for rural development by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), which entered into force with the reformed Common Agricultural Policy for 2014-2020: 'a supply chain involving a limited number of economic operators, committed to cooperation, local economic development, and close geographical and social relations between producers, processors and consumers'. • Possible types of SFSC

  3. Session 1: What is short food supply chain (SFSC) • Possible types of SFSC: 1. Consumer-Producer Partnerships e.g. CSA - Community Supported Agriculture, AMAP, GAS 2. On-farm, direct sales e.g. farm shops, farm based hospitality, roadside sales, pick-your-own 3. Off-farm, direct or with minimum intermediaries e.g. farmers markets, box schemes, catering Not possible to identify a single model of SFCswhichis most appropriate for scalingup and increasing farmer incomes

  4. Session 2: How to initiate Short Food Supply Chain in one territory • How to start? • What are main issues and steps? • How to organise core group? • How to manage first steps (analysis, animation…)?

  5. Session 3: Development of Short Food Supply Chain • What are possible models fo SFSC development? • How to build capacities? • How to establish management? • How to finance?

  6. Session 5: Market access • How to chose market? • What are possible market solutions (direct selling, selling on farm, off-farm selling)?

  7. Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains • „Short food supply chains involve very few intermediaries. In many cases produce only travels a short distance, so producer and consumer can actually talk to each other...Such supply chains typically involve local producers working together to promote local food markets.These partnerships help boost the rural economy, creating new ways of selling local produce and attracting new types of customer. They also foster cooperation between local farms, the tourist industry and the food sector”.

Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains Economiceffects: • Improvedfarmers’ income in the result of: • increased negotiating power for groups of producers • possibility for diversifyingproduction • enhancedcompetitiveness • derivedbiggervalueadded (reducednumber of intermediaries) • higherstability of income • Savings for consumers: • pricereduction (less intermediaries) • New jobscreated

Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains Economiceffects -continued: • Increasedsustainability of localeconomy (= moreresilient, with higherincome/profit generationpotential) in the result of: •enhancedeconomiccooperationatlocallevel (localproducersworkingtogether to promotelocal food markets), • moreeffectivemethods of sellingproduce, • moreeffectivemethods to attract and retaincustomers = newtypes of customer, • enhancedcooperationbetweenlocalfarms, the touristindustry and the food sector, • reducedproducers’ transport costs • „branding” of the territory • betterutilization of resources • Boost for localeconomy

  10. Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains Environmentaleffects: • Reduced CO2 emissions in the result of reduced transport of food produce • Reduceduse of chemicals for industrial food processingpurpose

Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains Socialeffects: • Improvement of farmers’ standard of livingdue to: • increasedincome • mutual support to combat isolation and stress • Moreintegratedlocal and widercommunities in the result of: • cooperation of localproducers • cooperation of producers and consumers • cooperationwithinconsumers’ groups (i.e. CSA groups) • Improvement of localcommunities’ standard of living: • access to morehealthy food, • cleanerair (due to transport/CO2 emissionsreduction), • decreasednumber of roadaccidents (due to reduced transport/ trafficcongestion) • less worn and tornroads (= less public spending on roads, highercomfort of travelling)

Session 6: Socio-economic effects of short food supply chains Note: if the supply chain relationships are not structured according to principles of fairness, and if the production and distribution systems are not geared to environmental sustainability and social inclusion, then a short food chain will not deliver the social, environmental and economic benefits that are hoped for.
