Progress Report of APEC EGNRET Activities since EWG 51

This progress report provides an overview of the activities and outcomes of the APEC Expert Group on New & Renewable Technologies (EGNRET) since the last meeting. It includes updates on meetings, workshops, presentations, and future cooperation plans. The report also highlights the success rate of EGNRET projects and prospects for future works.

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47th meeting and associated event were held on October 10-13, 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia. • EGNRET 47 was held on October 10 to 11, 2016. • An APEC workshop, “2nd Workshop on Developing the Green Energy Smart Farm in APEC Region” (EWG 23 2015A), was held alongside the meeting on October 12-13, 2016 • A site visit to Indonesian PUSPIPTEK (Research Center for Science and Technology) in Banten, Indonesia.

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47 • 7 Member Economies attended the Meeting: • Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and USA • Other fora / organizations attended the meeting: • APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security (PPFS), Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC), Low Carbon Model Town Task Force (LCMT), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), and International Copper Association (ICA)

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47 7 invited presentations • APEC Energy Demand & Supply Outlook: 6th Edition & High Renewables Scenario and Renewables Heating & Cooling project – APERC • The Dissemination Plan of Low-Carbon Model Town (LCMT) Project- LCMT • ERIA Research and Policy Overview of Renewable Energy Uptake in ASEAN+6 – ERIA • WG1 Sustainable Development in Agriculture & Fishery Sectors - PPFS • APEC – ICA cooperation – ICA • APEC Secretariat Update - Ms. Penelope Howarth, Program Director of the APEC Secretariat ( video ) • Clean Energy Solutions Center Technical Assistance Support - US NREL ( conference call )

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47 Two major topics were discussed • Filling the Gap to Reach the Goal of Doubling Renewable Energy in the APEC Region • Renewable energy doubling goal would be reached by aggregate renewable energy development among the APEC economies. • It is suggested to measure the cost of developing renewable energy, and underline by different sectors and technologies. • Cooperating with EGEDA and APERC, and integrating APEC’s energy data to draw the roadmap are proposed.

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47 Two major topics were discussed Future Cooperation between EGNRET and PPFS • EGNRET and PPFS could cooperate to enhance food security and improve the farmers’ living standards. • The cooperation is suggested to integrate the EGNRET projects in past two years and the integrated data could be used as the reference for future proposed cooperation project direction. • The cooperation between EGNRET and PPFS could be included in sharing the technology of bioenergy and biodiesel with farms in the APEC region, improving the efficiency in farms by energy technologies, and bringing microgrid technology to rural area electrification.

EGNRET Activities since EWG 51 • EGNRET 47 Elections of Chair and Vice-Chair • Chinese Taipei was elected as the EGNRET Chair, and Korea as the Vice Chair consecutively to serve a two-year term, 2017-2018. • In addition, the secretaries were nominated by the Chair, and endorsed by EGNRET Representatives to hold the EGNRET secretariat.

  17. Prospective of EGNRET Works 2016-2017 • The EGNRET will focus more on renewable energy doubling goal, smart grid, low carbon town, etc. which are directly related to the SE4All, ESCI and APEC Smart Grid Initiative (ASGI). • EGNRET will expand the experience exchange or share of best practices for each economy to access the enough technology to further promote the renewable energy for RE doubling goal.

  18. Prospective of EGNRET Works 2016-2017 • The EGNRET will strengthen collaboration with APEC other fora such as PPFS, APERC, APSEC, LCMT Task Force, EGEE&C, EGEDA, Policy Partnership on Science, Technology, and Innovation (PPSTI). • Possible collaboration with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Energy Research Institute Network (ERIN), and International Copper Association Ltd. (ICA) on promotion of renewable energy in the APEC region will be pursued.
