  2. Word association game • Each person must say a word (place, time, person, whatever ...) that is associated with each of the following images as you see them. • Each word must be connected to the last, if you think the person who came before you said a word that was unconnected, you can say ‘ ‘challenge’ to see if they can explain • Start with the following picture:

  3. The purpose of this display has been to demonstrate the power of images and icons. • They can have a lasting power and meaning that goes beyond the item itself. • Can you think of one image/item that sums up the twentieth century?

  4. Your turn • Without discussing with anyone write down 5 things, people, events etc that you think defined the 21st Century so far • What has dominated the last 11 years? • How would you choose to represent them to future generations?

Great BritonNomination • John Lennon (The Beatles) • As you watch the video make notes on the techniques that the presenter uses to try and make Lennon sound iconic Listen for the following ´inventive´ How is interest in the band described? “Beatle ?” “Lennon´s attitude made working class culture ?” What was Lennon tuned into? What else other than their music set the group apart?

  6. Develop • How did it change the century that it was part of? • How did it change the lives of the people living at that time.

  7. Museum of the 21st Century • Choose your favourite idea • Working on your own, brainstorm your ideas for that one idea. • You will have to present your idea to the rest of the class to persuade them that it should be in the museum • Take each of the ideas that you have in your brainstorm and try and develop them with persuasive techniques • Also make sure you explain how your icon changed things in the world • Demonstrate how it is iconic and not just popular or famous.

Iconwork: Starter ideas If you´re stuck for ideas use some of these sentence starters and try and finish using persuasive techniques where you can. • “My icon changed the world because …” • “It is more important than similar inventions because…” • “It will be remembered in 50 years because…” • “Its appearance made it stand out …” • “most people in the world …” • “Its technology…” • “Its effect in different parts of the world …”

  9. Persuasive techniques:Write up your own ideas. Try to develop and improve on what you have already written for homework using the technqiues that you have just made a note of. • Triples • Rhetorical questions • Facts • Pronouns • Emotive language Nominations of ideas will be tomorrow.

  10. Example • “The mobile phone is an iconic item of the 20th century because it allowed people to connect in a way that had never been possible before. People had communicated on the phone for almost a century, but the mobile allowed people to make and change plans on the move, completely changing the way the that people did business and met friends.”

  11. Peer assessment • Swap with a partner and read their ideas • Try to write 3 questions that you think they need to answer, ideas that haven’t been covered • Or, mark sections that need developing in more detail

  12. Homework • Finish writing up your presentation • Try to learn it and think about the questions you may receive.

  13. Dragon´s den • What do you think this programme will be about? • “den” is where the dragon lives? • Why would someone go there? • Why would you call someone a dragon?

  14. Dragon´s den: sellingan idea • Magic whiteboard (good overview of programme idea) • What could the couple have done to make their pitch more successful? • What features of their presentation are successful? • Do you think that the product is a good idea?

  15. Website pitch • Hungry house pitch 1 • What make the pitch of hungryhouse.co.uk more successful than the previous one we have just seen • What props do they use? • Do you think that the website would be a success? Why?

  16. As a pair • Select your idea • Imagine you had to pitch this as an original idea in Dragon’s Den • Brainstorm the main ideas that you could use to sell the product • With you partner write up the the pitch

Pitch preparation – homework • Do you need any props? • What else can be done to make it a successful pitch? • You will have to perform this for the class and the class can vote on who gets the money. • Each person will have $100,000 to invest and they can divide it between upto 5 groups • Remember to keep in mind the product that they were given and how difficult a job it was to sell it

  19. Sellyourself - 3 minutes • Imagine that you´re applying to be the captain of a team – sports/ social/ business • Write one sentence selling yourself • “I would make a good captian because …” • The best answer will get a GHM
