  1. English 902 Week 2
  2. Now we will introduce you to the computer program that you will use throughout the semester. This program will allow you to create a customized Study Plan, designed to meet your individual needs. The program is Web-based, and you must register before you can use it.
  3. Your goal for today is to register for the software and understand how to complete the “Getting Started” activities, even though you might not finish the assessment today. In order to register, you will need either the access code that you bought in the bookstore or a credit/debit card
  4. If you came last week but did not bring the access code packet today (or a credit card to pay for access online), you MUST bring your code next week. If you don’t, you will be considered absent from class.
  5. These software accounts should be good for up to two years. If you are repeating English 902 within two years of your last 902 class, your registration should still be valid. If you created your English 902 software account less than two years ago, and your old English 902 access doesn’t work, ask for help.
  6. This is what an access packet looks like.
  7. You can use the laptops in this room to register for the software program. If you use our laptops, you do not need to log onto the campus network. However, when you use our desktop computers you need to log on to the PCC campus network.
  8. The easiest way to log on to the campus network is to use your eight-digit Student ID number as your network name. You password is your four-digit PIN number ( the same PIN number used for PCC online registration).
  9. How to register for the Bedford/St. Martin’s website Start by launching either Internet Explorer or Firefox.
  10. Internet Explorer opens on the Writing Center Homepage.
  11. Click on “English 902 Class Assignments”
  12. Next, select the link to the Bedford/St. Martin’s website.
  13. If you are a first-time user, click the green “student” link.
  14. Enter your e-mail address and name. Be sure that you type in the address correctly, as an incorrect or invalid address might cause problems later.
  15. Now, create a password that you will remember. The password must be at least four characters long.
  16. Be sure to write down the email address, user name, and password you use to register at the site. We suggest you write this information somewhere on your yellow Assignment Sheet. You will need this information to log on to the site each time you come to the Writing Center.
  17. Under “Instructor e-mail,” enter: rdlee@pasadena.edu. Write this down now. Otherwise, you won’t remember it. Next, click “Submit.”
  18. This screen confirms that you are now a registered student. Click “Continue.”
  19. If you have the activation code packet with you, click “Enter Activation Code.” If you are going to buy access using a debit/credit card, click “Purchase Access Online.”
  20. The next few slides are only for students who are using a debit or credit card to purchase access Online.
  21. Purchasing Access Online Start by clicking “Purchase Access Online.
  22. Purchasing Access Online Enter PCC’s zip code: 91106 Write this down. You won’t remember it in a few minutes.
  23. Purchasing Access Online Next, enter your name and email address. If you have used this site in the past, then select the “yes” button, and enter your password in the box. If you have not used this site before, select the “no” button, and you will be asked to create a password. Write down your new password!
  24. Purchasing Access Online Then select “Pasadena City College” from the list of schools in the drop-down menu and click “Next.”
  25. Purchasing Access Online Enter your credit or debit card information, and click “Next.” After you review your information, click “Place Your Order.”
  26. This is when MANY students have problems. Be sure that the address you enter is the same as the billing address for the credit or debit card. Also, if you receive an error message when you submit the credit or debit card information, don’t resubmit the information. You might be charged twice!
  27. Note: If you pay for access online, you do NOT have to wait for an access code to be sent to you via e-mail. When you finish entering your credit/debit card information, you are registered for the software.
  28. Once you have completed the registration process, go back to the Bedford/St. Martin’s start page and log in so you can explore the software
  29. After you log in, click: “LET’S GET STARTED.”
  30. 1 2 The assessment has two parts: 20 Grammar questions and a writing exercise.
  31. Click here on “Begin Part One.”
  32. Read the short introduction to Part One; then click here to begin the grammar portion of the diagnostic.
  33. Answer all 20 questions. Take your time. Do not rush!
  34. When you get to this results page, click the Print button. You will need these results when you meet with an instructor or mentor to develop your Study Plan. If you do not know how to print in the Writing Center, ask your mentor. We will be happy to help you.
  35. After you print your results, close the grammar section window by clicking on the “X” button in the upper-right corner.
  36. Part Two of “Let’s Get Started” requires you to write a few paragraphs in response to a prompt.
  37. There are two possible prompts. Choose one and click on the green text.
  38. Do not use a word processor; type your response in the window. Please write at least 10-15 sentences. The more you write, the more accurately we can assess your writing skills.
  39. When you are finished, click on “PRINT.” This will send your written response to a printer in the Writing Center. You need to pay ten cents for each page you print from our printers.
  40. Developing Your Study Plan When you meet with an instructor or your mentor to develop your Study Plan, you must bring your grammar assessment results and writing sample. Tell your mentor when you have finished both parts of the assessment process.
  41. After you have met with an instructor or your mentorand received your Study Plan, you will work in these four areas throughout the semester.
  42. Remember that you can always add items to your Study Plan. If you are ever unsure of what to do while in the Writing Center, please ask your mentor.
  43. If you forget these instructions, we will put a copy of this presentation on the English 902 web page.
  44. Most of you will finish the assessment process next week(Week 3). Be sure that you have a study plan by Week 4.
  45. Any Questions? Remember, this presentation is available on the English 902 web page. You can review it when you register for the program and/or start the assessment process.
