  1. Project SMILE A Partnership between families at Irish Elementary, North Fort Collins Business Association (NFCBA), the Fort Collins community, Health District, and local dentists

  2. Purpose • Share information about Irish Elementary and the dental needs of the our students • Share a collaborative plan to address the dental needs • Share ideas to finance the collaborative plan

  3. Irish Elementary • PreK-6th neighborhood school with 370 students • Two Early Childhood classes • 91% of the students receive Free/Reduced lunch benefits • 66% of the students are English Language Learners • K-1st grade: Dual Language strand with 50% balance of native English and native Spanish speakers • Extensive after school program and parent education classes

  4. The dental care need • Informal information • Throughout the year, scores of students come to the health office in pain due to their teeth • Survey among 5th and 6th graders revealed that few of them have seen a dentist since they were in Kindergarten • Formal information • Dental screening will be conducted at Irish at the end of February to determine actual needs.

  5. Collaborative Partnership • Start with students at Irish to establish a process • Support the Health District’s work to expand their dental capacity including work with local dentists • Raise funds to pay the co-pay for prioritized Irish Project SMILE students. These funds will be a source of last resort.
