  4. Herring Bone Setup

  5. Advantages Modification of Classroom Style Increases discussion Increased seating Good Workspace Attendees understand they are there to listen Everyone see speaker Best for learning experience with SME speaking to audience with little knowledge Puts speaker(s) in Power Position Disadvantages Decreased visibility Audience now opposing each other Setup discourages discussion and participation Little opportunity for speaker to get feedback to ensure audience understands information being delivered ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Herring Bone Setup

  6. Herring Bone Setup Recommended Uses • Training Sessions with limited space and you know the attendees well enough to ask feedback questions to assess that they “get it” How to Make it Work • Walk around the room – NO PODIUM EVER • Ask questions to ensure audience understands • Put those that may argue at same table or at least same side

  7. Convention Setup

  8. Advantages Variation of Classroom with no tables Maximizes seating Allows maximum dissemination of information from stage Everyone sees speaker Best for learning experience with SME speaking to audience with little knowledge Puts speaker(s) in Power Position Attendees understand they are there to listen ________________ Disadvantages No workspace No discussion Little opportunity for speaker to get feedback to ensure audience understands information being delivered Podium and stage reduce intimacy with speaker(s Most people will sit at back and the room will have empty chairs up front ________________ ________________ ________________ Convention Setup

  9. Convention Setup Recommended Uses • Training Sessions with large audiences • Public meetings with large audiences How to Make it Work • Maximize effectiveness of Audio/Visuals • Have handouts at back • Remember it’s a percentage thing with these

  10. Small Group Setup

  11. Advantages Variation of convention setup for small groups Maximizes seating Everyone sees speaker Best for learning experience with SME speaking to audience with little knowledge Puts speaker(s) in Power Position Attendees understand they are there to listen ________________ ________________ Disadvantages Can limit discussion No workspace Speaker(s) must queston audience for feedback to assess learning Most people will sit at back and the room will have empty chairs up front ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Small Group Setup

  12. Small Group Setup Recommended Uses • Most common for producer meetings!! How to Make it Work • Limit audio visuals. Use it – turn it off then talk • Ask open ended questions to encourage discussion • Limit initial seating! Have someone to add chairs as people arrive • If you’re the speaker sit down for the discussion to level so people with open up.

  13. Box Setup

  14. Advantages Everyone is a peer Discussion encouraged Good workspace and medium seating Ideal for group working sessions If no gap in middle it facilitates discussion ________________ ________________ ________________ Disadvantages People on opposing sides of seating tend to oppose each other verbally. Gap in middle creates mental gap May be difficult for facilitator to maintain control Audio/Visual use is difficult ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Box Setup

  15. Box Setup Recommended Uses • Working sessions of peers who need to solve problems • Small groups (common for commissioner meetings) How to Make it Work • Put facilitator at head of table • Have clear roles defined if necessary • Group must want to function

  16. Horse Shoe Setup

  17. Advantages Head of table can see and control well More seating than box but less work space If possible can place difficult people in middle to limit them ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Disadvantages Discussion difficult Anyone in middle is uncomfortable mentally and usually physically Encourages side conversations Gap in middle creates mental gap May be difficult for facilitator to maintain control ________________ ________________ ________________ Horse Shoe Setup

  18. Horse Shoe Setup Recommended Uses • Training Sessions with limited group size • Well suited for computer training if outside or inside seating is eliminated and trainer can walk and monitor. • Can work well if groups will break out and work independently for part of session in the same room How to Make it Work • Walk around and check for learning • To encourage discussion sit down with group • Eliminate seating on inside until or unless needed. • Have Audio/Visuals at open end of the horse shoe

  19. Chair Circle Setup

  20. Advantages Best for encouraging discussion because all barriers removed Level playing field – all peers Works best for groups of seven to thirty Facilitator can stand to gain more of a power position ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Disadvantages Works best for groups of seven to thirty VERY Easy to lose control May be uncomfortable for introverts and others Easy for small percent to dominate discussion Use of audio visuals is almost impossible ________________ ________________ ________________ Chair Circle Setup

  21. Chair Circle Setup Recommended Uses • Sessions where intimacy with the group is critical so they will talk. How to Make it Work • Facilitator can stand to gain more of a power position • If some aren’t talking ask them an open ended question • If some are talking to much thank them and remind them that others may have input.
