Moving to Cities • Cities grew quickly in the late 1800s and early 1900s • Most new immigrants came to work in cities • Many people moved from farms to big cities, fewer farm workers were needed because of new machines
Chicago Booms • Chicago grew quickly because of its location near transportation routes • Stockyard: a fenced in area where large numbers of animals are kept until they are used as food or moved to another place • Skyscraper: first on was built in Chicago
Changes in Cities • Technology allowed cities to grow, but crowding cause problems • Growth of steel industry made skyscrapers possible • Electricity for lights, elevators, shop signs, stages • Rapid Transit: a system of trains used to move people around cities
Cities grew noisier and more crowded • People began living in slums, a poor, crowded part of the city • Tenements (slum buildings) were not safe
Helping Each Other • Immigrants helped each other find jobs and places to live • Jane Adams and Ellen Gates Starr opened the Hull House in Chicago. It was one of the first settlement house in the US. • Settlement House: a community center for people in cities • People came to learn English, get medical care, or find jobs
