  1. “According to the Polls…”Ephesians 2:8-911/12/2006Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. “According to the Polls…” • 77% of Americans believe in Heaven • 76% say their chances of going to heaven are good or excellent. • Nearly 9 out of 10 (85%) consider themselves to be Christian. • 85% of the people living in this country think they will go to heaven when they die.

  3. “According to the Polls…” 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matt 7:21-23)

  4. “According to the Polls…” • Not everybody who thinks they are going to heaven when they die, are going. • Many who profess to be Christians are not what the Bible defines as a Christian. · • Question #1: If Jesus were to come back today, do you think you would go to heaven?

  5. “According to the Polls…” • Question #2: If Jesus were to come back today, why should you get into heaven? • The chaplain smiled and said, “I’ve got good news. There was a man who walked this earth and took this test and scored a 100 points. His name is Jesus. And he says that the purpose of the test is not to score a 100 points but to indicate our need for help.”

  6. “According to the Polls…” 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:8-10)

  7. “According to the Polls…” • A Salvation Based on Man Is False! • But a man-based salvation is so seductive. • If you believe that you can go to heaven, based on what they do, your hope is built on a false premise. • We can’t make up the rules. • We have to come to God according to the truth!

  8. “According to the Polls…” • 57% of the respondents said that, “if people are generally good, or do enough good things they will earn a place in heaven.”

  9. “According to the Polls…” • When asked “do you believe that good people, will still go to heaven after they die regardless whether or not they believe in Jesus? 46% agreed, 47% disagreed

  10. “According to the Polls…” • Salvation Is not a Human Achievement. 8and this not from yourselves (Ephesians 2:8) • Here’s the truth: Salvation doesn’t come from man, and it can’t be earned.

  11. “According to the Polls…” • Salvation Is not by Human Accomplishments. 9not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:9)

  12. “According to the Polls…” “Where O, where can my baby be, The Lord took her away from me; She’s gone to heaven so I gotta be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world.” (“Last Kiss” – 1962 Wayne Cochran, with the C.C. Riders, Re-recorded in 1964 - by J. Frank Wilson and The Cavaliers)

  13. “According to the Polls…” • But a person cannot be good enough and cannot do enough to be saved, because salvation is not by works. 5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3:5)

  14. “According to the Polls…” • Salvation has nothing to do with our rituals • Salvation has nothing to do with our religion • Salvation has nothing to do with our righteousness • Salvation is a DIVINE ACT!

  15. “According to the Polls…” • Salvation Based on Jesus Is Free! • It’s not what we do, but what Christ did. 8it is the gift of God- (Eph 2:8)

  16. “According to the Polls…” “I am not what I ought to be. I am not what I hope to be. But, blessed be God, I am not what I was, and by His grace I am what I am.” (John Newton) • Salvation is free, full, and forever.

  17. “According to the Polls…” • How? How can that be? 8 By grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:8). 8we were dead in our transgressions and sins (2:4). • “Grace” means we didn’t deserve anything, but we got it anyway.

  18. “According to the Polls…” • Jesus said, “It is finished.” (John 19:30) • It was a servant’s word: “I’ve finished the work that you gave me to do.” • It was a priest’s word: “It’s perfect.” • It was also an artist’s word: “The picture is completed.”

  19. “According to the Polls…” • It was also a merchant’s word: “The debt has been fully paid.” • Jesus was saying, “I have purchased salvation for all men. I have paid the sin debt.” That’s grace!

  20. “According to the Polls…” • Conclusion • What will your answer be? • Why should you be allowed into heaven? 37What should we do? (Acts 2:37)

  21. “According to the Polls…” 38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)

  22. “According to the Polls…” • God is calling you today. • Will you come to Him today?
