  1. Godly Homes in an Ungodly World (11) The Role of Parents - 1

  2. Psalm 127:3-5 “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth…”

  3. Psalm 127:3-5 • “…Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”

  4. Preliminary Observations • The direction we take our parenting will have a direct bearing on society. • Yet, while acknowledging the need for good parenting, society disregards much of what God’s word teaches.

  5. Preliminary Observations • As parents we may not be able to control overall direction of the world, but we CAN have an impact on OUR children. • Prov. 22:6 cf. Ezekiel 16:44 • You have been entrusted with a soul!

  6. The Role of Father • Prov. 20:7, 17:6 • As head of the house he has responsibilities. • Consider this in 1 Tim. 3:4, Titus 1:6 & 1 Tim. 3:12 • Much of what leaders do applies to all Christians. Such responsibilities apply to all fathers.

  7. The Role of Father • His responsibilities include: • Providing 1 Tim. 5:8, cf. Matt. 7:9-11 • Protecting his family • Ephesians 6:4 • Colossians 3:21 • Prov. 3:11, 12, Heb. 12:7-11

  8. The Role of Father • He will love his children • Heb. 12:5-11 • Prov. 13:24 • Consider the prodigal – Luke 15:11-31, 20-21 • Abraham – Gen. 17:18David – 1 Chron. 29:18-19Job – Job 1:4-5

  9. The Role of Father • The greatest example of a Father’s love – God and His Son • It is truly tragic how many fathers either neglect or abandon their responsibilities. • Will we be COURAGEOUS to be godly fathers?

  10. The Role of Mother Love her children Generally it is a natural thing (though much is learned & developed)

  11. The Role of Mother • Titus 2:4 Love her children Why this command? • Not all women love their children – Rom. 1:31 • The need to learn what is best (not what is wanted)

  12. The Role of Mother • Consider1 Tim. 2:15 • “Saved in childbearing” The best meaning is that she fulfills whatever role she has been entrusted with, including raising her children properly.

  13. The Role of Mother • Manage the house • 1 Tim. 5:14, Titus 2:5 • would include doing her part in raising the children (she has authority over them!) • It is a mistake to think only the father is to discipline his children. Mothers & fathers support each other in raising their children.

  14. Godly mothers! • Jochabed, mother of Moses – Ex. 2:1-2, Heb. 11:23 • Hannah, mother of Samuel 1 Sam. 1:11, 1:19-28 • Lois and Eunice – 2 Tim. 1:5 (& 3:15) • Mary, mother of Jesus • The virtuous woman – Prov. 31:28-31

  15. Let us take our role as parents seriously
