  2. Traits • Vertebrates (have a spine) • however so do some reptiles and insects • Warm Blooded • however so are fish and frogs

  4. Characteristics • Lower jaw is single bone on both sides • Mammary glands (Produce milk to feed children) • Have hair

  5. Characteristics • The main artery leaving the heart curves to the left • Have a diaphragm • 3 bones in middle ear

  6. Classification • Subphylum – Vertebrata • Class - Mammalia • 5000 species • 26 orders • Kingdom – Animalia • Phylum – Chordata

  7. Subclass • Prototheria or Monotremes (2 species) • Metatheria or Marsupials (275 species) • Eutheria or placental mammals (3982 species)

  8. Interesting facts • 4 mammalian groups fully aquatic • Nearly all mammals have baby-teeth • Some exceptions include the anteater • Mammals use two bones for hearing that ancestors used for eating • The largest mammal on land is the African Bull Elephant • The tallest animal on the planet is the Giraffe
