  1. METEOR BACKGROUND • This is a foundation project in an ambitious endeavor to provide the RIT research community with a means to conduct near space experiments • Will serve as launching point for future projects, experiments, and research • Small satellite launching capability • Unobscured space observation • Moon / Planetary missions • Provide RIT students with an opportunity to explore their interest in space exploration, science, and technologies • Will build on existing technologies and prior experiments • RELAX!!!!!!!!

  2. HAVE FUN!!! Project Objective: Design a recoverable, airborne, high altitude, balloon tethered, 3-axes stabilized platform for future small rocket launches and near space scientific experiments Challenges: To design a system for the rigors of near space (>80,000’), • <1% atmospheric density • High temperature range • Fast and high temperature changes • Radiation • Low weight Advisors: Dr. Patru Electrical Engineering Professor Dr. Kozak Mechanical Engineering Professor Project Leaders: Mike Wilson, Project Manager, ME (585) 507-3853 Josh Shreve, Lead Engineer, ME (585) 737-8132

  3. Design Requirements: • Launch and retrieval of the platform with minimal damage • Maintain location and status information for duration of mission • Establish two-way communication link with ground • Reach desired altitude( >80,000 ft) • Gather and record sensor data Project Aspirations: • Successfully stabilize the platform for a defined time period • Obtain visual images of payload and environment while in flight

  4. 2 X Mechanical Engineers • Design and construct platform structure • Design attitude stability control system • Ensure Survivability of platform and payload • Design actuators and mechanical operators • FEA analysis, material selection and manufacturing 1 X Systems Engineer • Interface with government agencies including FAA, FCC, etc. • Perform systems integration and reliability analysis • Ensure disciplined and consistent mission processes

  5. 2 X Electrical Engineers • Design and build stability control circuit • Implementation of solid state sensors • Handle Communication and position tracking capabilities 1 X Computer Engineer • Coordinate component interaction and control through onboard computer • Allow for remote actuation on components by radio transmission to computer
