Station 1 (Part A) In microgravity: (microgravity means there is effectively no gravity) The magnetic field would produce the same patterns with the filings as on Earth, but the filings would not fall when the magnets are removed because gravity is effectively minimized. On the moon: The magnetic field would produce the same patterns with the filings in microgravity as on Earth but the filings would fall more slowly on the moon due to reduced gravity.

  3. Station 1: How would the masses and the weights of the jars change in microgravity and on the moon? The results would be the same. Mass is not affected by gravity, therefore mass would stay the same. Weight is affected by gravity. Because there is no gravity in a microgravity environment (example the Space Shuttle or the International Space Station) the jars would not weigh anything.

  4. Station 2 Describe the changes in the glider’s speed over time. • From 0 to 4 seconds the glider was moving at a high and constant speed. • From 4 to 8 seconds it was moving at a medium constant speed. • From 8 seconds on the glider was not moving. What might have happened to cause the glider’s speed to change? The glider might have bumped into a wall or other object. Some force was applied to change its speed.

Station 3: Describe the role that gravity played in the formation of the solar system and the universe. • Gravity pulls matter together to form stars and planets. • Stars are so massive that nuclear fusion occurs in their cores. This is the source of their radiant energy. Because of their masses they have tremendous gravitational attraction to other objects. • Black holes seem to be the most massive objects in the universe because they produce the most gravity.

  6. Station 4 • Birds 1 and 2 are heterozygous (Ll) • All the other birds are homozygous recessive (ll)

Station 5 Describe how scientific thinking about the universe or the solar system has changed over time? • The geocentric model of the solar system has been replaced with the heliocentric model. • We now know that the universe is made of billions of galaxies, which are each made of billions of stars. • We now know that almost all objects in the universe are moving away fro the milky way galaxy.

  8. Station 6 What evidence did Wegener use to support his theory? • The continents fit together like a puzzle. • Several types of fossils were found on different landmasses. • Mountain belts end on one continental coastline and reappear on a landmass across the ocean. • Evidence of global climate changes- ancient glaciers found in tropical regions. Scientific disciplines used to integrate plate tectonics knowledge: Cartography (map making); Paleontology (study of fossils); Geology (study of the crust); Meteorology (study of weather)

  9. Station 8 Draw a diagram of the Sun’s structure. Label all the interior and exterior layers.

  10. Station 9 Explain why amoebas have more in common with humans than bacteria. • Amoeba are eukaryotic and have membrane bound organelles. • Their DNA forms chromosomes. • Though they are unicellular, their cells are much larger and more complex than bacteria.

  11. Station 10 Suggest three ways that Malik and Anthony could improve their experiment. • The could run more trials • They could test different materials for their tires • They could test one variable at a time
