  1. Our bodies are mainly composed of water- newborns have 78% water, while adults have 55-60% water. Water is vital for every body function, especially in summer. Here are five reasons to drink more water. 5 Reasons Why Staying Hydrated is Crucial 1.Insufficient fluids + High temperatures = Heat stroke Water regulates body temperature by sweating and respiration. More sweating and heavier breathing during hot months can quickly deplete water reserves and lead to dehydration and overheating. Drink half to one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day, depending on your activity level and location. 2. Fluids help muscles contract Experts caution that if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Your muscles are 79 percent water and need adequate fluid to contract smoothly. If you skip fluid intake during summer workouts and family activities, you may suffer muscle spasms and aches. Sports drinks are usually only recommended for high-intensity athletes who need to replace lost electrolytes and potassium. 3. Dehydration harms all cellular activities Water is vital for every cell in your body. Your brain and heart are 73% water, and your lungs are about 83% water. Dehydration causes cells to lose up to 28% or more of their water volume. This affects all organs and systems, causing illness, pain, and cellular damage. 4. Older adults may not know they need water As we age, we tend to drink less water even when our body needs it. Seniors over 60 who drink when thirsty may only get 90% of the fluids they need. Experts recommend that older adults drink water even when not thirsty, especially if they're physically active or live in warm areas. Seniors are more prone to heat exhaustion, so it's essential to take extra precautions. 5. Children have a higher risk of dehydration and heat illnesses Keep your kids hydrated during summer play by ensuring they take a water bottle to every outdoor event and take mandatory drink breaks throughout the day. A child weighing around 90 pounds should drink 5 ounces, or 10 gulps, of water every 20 minutes. For teens weighing about 130 pounds, 9 ounces, or 20 gulps, of water is recommended during that same period. w w w . r e v e r e h e a l t h . c o m
