  2. The importance of different arenas and networks for youth binge drinking and the use of illicit drugs Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  3. WHY? • Social worker for 20 years • Detached outreach work (fältare, utekontakten, SSP) • Lecturer • PhD student Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  4. Research questions, article 1 • What is the importance of different arenas for youth interaction in binge drinking and use of illicit drugs • The importance of the social networks in- and outside these arenas Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  5. Article 1 • Interviews carried out in three municipalities, two of them with under 15.000 inhabitants and the third in a medium sized municipality • Interviews with 28 persons between 15-18 (under legal age for alcohol drinking) • Interviews mostly conducted in Youth centers (fritidsgårdar) • Ethnology (?) Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  6. Article 1, background • Autumn-11, meeting with different groups of youth workers in the Jönköping region • Autumn -11, short survey to “fältare” around the country • Spring-12 national conference for “fältare” Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  7. Findings from interviews, surveys and meetings (work in progress) • The “street” arenas for binge drinking has moved into the homes • Very few admit having used illegal drugs or having knowledge • Professional youth workers no longer have (easy) access to the indoor arenas • Parents knowledge ? Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  8. Arenas • Houses or apartments, • Barbequeplaces, sometimes it is ok to drink there (grillplatser) Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  9. Network • Friends • Absent grown ups Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  10. Control • Total control over where, with whom, what and how much you drink Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  11. “ the grownups think that of course, youth stay out on the streets, but what the f,,, youth today is not that stupid. Me and my pals we use to plan our parties in advance, we can plan several days ahead and write lists of who are invited, what is allowed to do or not, for instance if you pick a fight we will report you to the police, we plan days ahead” • Boy 17 Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  12. Money • Expensive, pubs or “Systembolaget” • Easier and cheaper buying from illegal smugglers Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  13. “No, I want to want to know at least a week in advance so that I can plan, not just “Now I want to get drunk”, I think of money, can I afford to get drunk, if I can´t then I don´t drink” • Girl 16 Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  14. New arenas, my own thoughts • Control • In bigger municipalities the city center is taken over by grownups (uteserveringar), in smaller places there are few pubs/restaurants • Tired of professional and voluntary adults out on the “streets” Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012

  15. “ it is kind of sad that I am only 16 and already have all this experience” • Girl 16 Birgitta Ander 27/8 2012
