What is a school psychologist? • School psychologist: A person who helps youth succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. • They can be found in both private and public schools • Work with children both individually and in groups (“Banana Split Club”) • In the year 2000 school psychologists were named one of the top ten “hot professions” by US News and World Report

Frequently Asked Questions and answers about School Psychologists • What is the job market like? • There are millions of schools around the world that lack school psychologists…This is one field in which you should have close to no problem finding a job • What is the difference between school psychologists and guidance counselors? • School psychologists work more with the actual counseling of the students, whereas guidance counselors focus more on where are we going to send these students to graduate school • School psychologists are often employed outside of the school, since their degree is so much stronger. For example, guidance counselors are truly focused within the school district whereas school psychologists can work at a clinic, etc.

Differences in CertificationSchool Psychologist vs. Guidance Counselor • Although it varies from state to state, school psychologists usually undergo a two to three years masters program plus a full year of field experience • Guidance counselors are usually certified after one year of a concentrated masters program • Both professions offer doctoral programs • School psychologists have the option to become nationally certified. Though in eighteen states you can take the National Certification test as an alternative way to become certified.
