  1. Surgery to Reduce or Eliminate Floaters Being able to see well is important. Anything that gets in the way shouldn’t be ignored. A common but very annoying problem is the development of floaters. They can develop in one or both eyes. They tend to show up over time, but they can get worse and worse. Some people can ignore them well but to others, they are very annoying and distracting. Your eye doctor should keep a good eye on them. If they bother you quite a bit or they are severe, floaters surgery may need to be discussed. This is typically reserved for the worst cases. Some individuals get them and they never get worse. They just learn to deal with them. You need to share with your eye doctor how they are affecting you and if they do get worse. What to Expect There is no guarantee floaters surgery will remove all of them either. The procedure should break up the larger ones. However, you may notice even more of them after the procedure, they are just smaller. In other instances, a person no longer experiences them at all and they are very happy to no longer have that type of hindrance. Your doctor can give you input about your case. There are risks involved with all types of procedures, including floaters surgery. Knowing what to expect, the pros and cons, the cost, and even what will take place during the procedure can help you to make up your mind. You need all of the facts and you need time to be able to make your decision. Due to the risks, it isn’t something you should do if you have just a few small floaters. Other Procedures Often, the floaters are the symptom of another issue. Your eye care professional will need to carefully look at that too. For example, it may be the result of cataracts diabetes, or an eye infection.

  2. They need to look at those problems and come up with a good solution. Often, when those underlying issues are successfully treated, the floaters will go away on their own. If you do need floaters surgery, the procedure is called a Vitrectomy. The vitreous is removed and the floaters along with it. A clear fluid that has been sterilized is put in its place. You may need to keep your eyes downward for a long period of time to allow this to settle. You aren’t going to be able to engage in any vigorous activities for several weeks. Risks There are several possible risks associated with floaters surgery. The biggest concern is the retina detaching from the eye. There is also the risk of the patient developing an infection in one or both eyes. To help reduce the risk, a laser procedure may be the best course of action. Not all patients are a good candidate for this. Your eye care professional will have to evaluate it. Floaters very close to the retina can’t be removed with the laser procedure. The further aware they are from the retina, the easier it is to remove then successfully with this particular procedure. There are many variables that your eye doctor will need to discuss with you. This isn’t a procedure they should rush to consider for you. It should be a last resort option. Recovery In order to gain the bet results from floaters surgery, make sure you follow the instructions by your doctor. You may need to make some arrangements in advance to get help with chores at home or with children. You may need to take time of work and get someone to drive you around for a few weeks.
