  2. “Even if you're thinking about it, there are a few things you should keep to yourself during a job interview. Be cautious in what you say and how you respond, and keep the focus on your job abilities and qualifications. The interviewer is uninterested in your personal life, your vacation plans, or why you are so desperate to acquire the job. He or she is curious as to why you are the greatest candidate for this position. Don't name it if you don't believe you meet all of the requirements.” The following is a list of the top 23 things not to say during an interview:

  3. My current position is one that I dislike. (Do you think you'll dislike this job if you're hired?) • In a few weeks, I'll be taking a vacation. (Ask for time off once you've received a job offer.) • My boss is the worst boss I've ever had. (Will you say the same thing about your new boss if things don't work out?) • My current employer is a disaster. (Are you going to say something similar about the new firm?)

  4. What is the salary for this position? (First, let the employer put up the money.) • When will I be able to take a vacation? (Don't inquire about pay until you've been offered the position.) • Can you reimburse my cab fare home? (Plan ahead of time how you'll get around.) • Do you mind if I pick up this phone call? (Before you go into the interview, make sure your phone is turned off.)

  5. This job is extremely important to me. (It's important not to appear desperate.) • I don't have all of the qualifications you demand, but I'm a quick study. (Let the interviewer decide if you're a good fit, and focus on the abilities you already have.) • It's on my curriculum vitae. (It is, but the interviewer would like to hear it from you.) • I have an appointment coming up; will this be over soon? (Allocate plenty of time for the interview and be aware that it may go longer than you anticipated.)

  6. I apologise for being late. (Unless it's an emergency, that is.) • Swear words or profanity. (Be professional and courteous.) • What is the company's policy on co-worker dating? (This isn't about your dream life; it's about your career.) • Is there an open bar at holiday parties or do you have Friday Happy Hours? (It's not a good idea to drink and go on a job interview.)

  7. I don't own a car yet, but I plan to get one shortly. (It's the same as before.) • This schedule is inconvenient for me. Is it possible to change it? (Ask for nothing until you've been offered the job.) • I don't have any questions for you. (You should have a list of questions ready to ask the interviewer at all times.) • What are your responsibilities at this firm? (You should do extensive study on the firm and be prepared to discuss it.)

  8. What does the benefits package include? (Talk about benefits once you've received a job offer.) • Interviews give me a lot of anxiety. (The interviewer is looking for someone who is confident in their talents.) • Is it possible for me to work from home? (Ask for optional work circumstances only after you've received a job offer.)
