  2. THE BRITISH RESTRICTIONS • By 1770 due to distance, England had little control over the colonies. • England provided: • Defense • Money and Credit • Common Market on Trade • COLONIES WERE SELF-GOVERNING

  3. NAVIGATION ACTS Began 1651 • Restriction on Colonial Trade • Could only buy and sell with England • England kept raising taxes on certain goods knowing that the colonies would have to buy from them. • THIS MADE PEOPLE VERY MAD!

  4. STAMP ACT • British Parliament passes the first law that helps England, but not the colonists. • Official Stamps were required for all legal documents • Amounting to 10 pounds in America, and only 2 in Britain.

  5. STAMP ACT CONGRESS • Delegates were sent to NYC • Prepared the Declaration of Right and Grievances • England repealed the act BUT….

  6. LEVIED OTHER TAXES • Paint • Lead • Glass • AND YES, THE OH SO IMPORTANT TEA. • HOW WILL THE COLONIST’S HAVE TEA TIME?

  7. NOW WHY DID BRITAIN DO THAT? • They wanted the colonies to be under their control. • They realized that they were becoming less and less dependant on British goods, and that would mean a loss of trade and taxes. • Possibly they foresaw the future?

  8. BOYCOTT ENGLAND Poor guys thought that would help… Instead 5 guys were killed BOSTON MASSACRE Started mass editorials demanding a trial of the captain.

  9. BOSTON TEA PARTY! • Hey guys, I have an idea, let’s go throw all this tea in a river, the Brits will be really mad about that, but we’ll dress as Indians. So they think the Indians did it • AH! A PROTEST….

  10. INTOLERABLE ACTS • Massachusetts Government Act Replaced all elected government with appointed officials from England. Forbade assembly • Murder Act (Justice Act) Replaced all judges with appointed judges Requiring trials occur outside the colony Bail

  11. INTOLERABLE ACTS • BOSTON PORT ACT Blocked the Port, No trade • The Quartering Act Colonists had to quarter or house soldiers staying in the colony

  12. THE FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS • Delegates from all colonies ( except GA) • Petitioned the King • Boycotted British trade • Set-up Spy Commissions

  15. 2nd CONTINENTAL CONGRESS • Took power of central government • Named George Washington Commander and Chief • 1775

  16. DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE 1776 • Established State Governments Independent of Britain.
