  1. VOICE Let your writing show a personality!

  2. Ask yourself • Is it more emotional than an encyclopedia article? • Is the voice appropriate for the topic, purpose, and audience? • It is personal? Does my paper have personality?

  3. How do you do that? • Write honestly and from the heart • Share my feelings about the topic • Write to be read • Use expression • Give the reader a sense of the person behind the words • Connect with the reader • Be an individual; unique!

  4. I can remember the first time I ever saw Sarah. There I was at Camp Robinswold, dropped off like a sack of potatoes at this circle of cabins out in the country. Trying to cover my stomach rumbling nervousness with cool detachment, I saw this girl with long, wavy, blond hair glimmering in the sun & she caught my eye. As I stared in awe, my aloofness being replaced by pure hormonal curiosity, her soft, blue eyes met my chocolate ones. That was all the prompting I needed. When the counselors told us to sit in a circle on the cold, hard, earthen floor, I managed to park it right next to the sensational Sarah, thinking to myself that maybe I should write my parents tonight and tell them camp might not be so bad after all.
