  2. Introduction • Job wanted to plead his case before God- 13:3 • Here God begins to ask Job many questions • He challenged Job to answer them • Job was wise but he didn’t know the answers to them • He was humbled by the questions • And brought to repentance • Job 42:6- “Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.”

  3. Introduction-2 • There have been many great men since Job • Some very wise like Solomon • And others with superior abilities in different areas • But all of them, and all who are alive today are limited • Regardless of ability, education, training or experience each of us is limited • By our lack of knowledge, our lack of comprehension and our humanity

  4. Human Knowledge Is Limited • Knowledge abounds today • Daniel 12:4 has been fulfilled • Never before has knowledge increased as much • Computers have made it available to all • Yet there are many things man still does not know • And some things he will never know • Let us consider three of those things

  5. Some Things Man Cannot Know-1 1. When and how the universe was made • It had a beginning • Scientists have advanced various theories • Based on various observations and assumptions • God alone knows how the worlds began • For He designed and made them • We can only know about it by faith- Heb. 11:3

  6. Some Things Man Cannot Know-2 2. What constitutes life • Man knows that life must have had a beginning • He knows much of the chemistry of its processes • He has identified and deciphered its genetic code • He has modified and manipulated several species • But still he doesn’t know what makes things alive • Nor has anyone made even 1 living cell • Only its Creator knows what constitutes life

  7. Some Things Man Cannot Know-3 • When the world will come to an end • Reason and experience indicate that it will end • God’s word tells us that it will- II Pet. 3:10 • But no one knows when it will occur- Mk.13:32 • Many other things man cannot know because God has not revealed them- Deut. 29:29 • He has provided all the knowledge we need • To know Him and to live a righteous life

  8. Man Is Limited Morally and Spiritually-1 • Jeremiah’s testimony- Jer. 10:23 • Man cannot find the right way by himself • Those who think that they can are deceived- Prov. 14:12 • The Bible records the failures of those who have tried their own way • The sacrifice that Cain chose was rejected - Gen. 4:5 • The sons of Aaron were burned to death for using profane fire- Lev. 10:2 • The Israelites were oppressed and suffered when they chose their own way- Judg. 17:6

  9. Man Is Limited Morally and Spirtually-2 • People are still suffering for following their own foolish ways • Our society has become more selfish and lawless • Man is limited not by hereditary depravity but by his ignorance and his selfish and perverse desires- Jas. 1:14-15 • God’s word reveals the right way- Mt. 7:13 • It provides forgiveness of sins and perfects our life • It will also make for a peaceful, harmonious society • It is best for us now and in eternity

  10. Man Is Limited by Time-1 • One asset that cannot be renewed or increased • Time limits our daily activities • We have obligations that require time • We need to redeem the time- Eph. 5:16 • That is making the best use of those 24 hours • This is a challenge for all of us • We must set aside time for the most important things • Number of our days is also limited- Psa. 90:10

  11. Man Is Limited by Time-2 • With the best of health care, the current life span is about 80 years • They go by faster than the young can imagine • They may be shortened by disease, accident or violence • All have an appointment with death- Heb. 9:27 • Wise course is to prepare early in life- Eccl. 12:1 • God will bless those who remember Him to obey His word

  12. In Conclusion • We live in an age of scientific breakthroughs and technological advances • Some think science can solve all of man’s problems • We must guard against such a proud and foolish attitude • Not trusting in ourselves, other people or science • But in our loving Father in Heaven • Who is eternal, omniscient and omnipotent • Are you trusting in the Lord this morning?
