  2. Blood Pathway in the Heart

  3. The Heart • Strongest organ in the body. • A hollow muscular organ, which is composed of “chamber, rooms, and doors” which regulate blood flow and pressure throughout the heart and the system. • Its main job is to pump blood throughout the body. • Weighs approximately 250g. And is about the size of your fist. • Beats 100,000 times in a day and roughly 2.5 billion times in a lifetime.

  4. How the Heart Works • The heart works as a pump, pumping blood throughout our body through a network of blood vessels. • The heart runs on a conduction system, which signals its contraction and what gives it its “Bum-Bum!”.

  5. Aorta Largest blood vessel in body Supplies body with oxygenated blood

  6. Arteries Carry oxygenated blood to body Blood vessels

  7. Arterioles Smaller blood vessels Carry oxygenated blood Break off from arteries

  8. Atrium The upper chambers in the heart

  9. Blood Carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body Pumped by the heart

  10. Capillaries Smallest blood vessels Walls are only one cell thick Connect veins and arteries

  11. Vein Blood vessels Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart

  12. Vena Cava Main vein in body Carries deoxygenated blood into the right atrium

  13. Ventricle The lower chamber of the heart Pumps blood to the rest of the body

  14. Venules Connect arteries to veins to return blood to heart
