1. 2007 CALPHAD MeetingZi-Kui Liu, CALPHAD, Inc., DMR 0700005 The CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) approach consists of representing the Gibbs Energies of each phase, from which data such as the complex phase equilibria shown on the right can be determined at a fraction of the time and cost of doing so experimentally. This year, the CALPHAD meeting was held at Penn State University and a wide variety of topics were presented with 148 participants from 25 countries and total 141 presentations. 2. 2007 CALPHAD MeetingZi-Kui Liu, CALPHAD, Inc., DMR 0700005 In addition to discussing current issues of the CALPHAD community, educating students is a primary goal of the yearly CALPHAD meetings. Many students at the post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate levels attended the 2007 meeting, where they gave talks and presented posters outlining their work. Furthermore, the NSF helped to award fourteen CALPHAD scholarships to promising students to cover expenses for attending the meeting. They are pictured above with Dr. Larry Kaufman (a pioneer of the CALPHAD approach, fi) and Dr. Zi-Kui Liu (editor_in_chief of the CALPHAD journal).
