  2. Main Functions of CS-L: • Academic-Based Service-Learning: • Classes, Individuals, Organizations • Federal Work Study Program: • Off-Campus (Community-Based) • Alternative Break Program: • Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, May, Weekend

  3. Service-Learning is: • A real-world experience in the community, out of the “JMU Bubble” • Organized volunteering with reflection to help you apply what you are learning in class • Work that benefits you AND nonprofit agenciesin the Harrisonburg Community

Service areas • Aging & Health Services (Chandler) • Community Wellness & Environment Services (Becky) • Disability Services (Tori) • Early & Elementary Education Services (Megan) • Exceptional Education Services (Hannah) • Hunger & Housing Services (Chinenye) • Youth Empowerment Services (Kelley)

  5. Academic-Based Service Coordinators visit classes to: • Inform students about opportunities available through the CS-L office • Discuss the purpose behind their service • Help students sign up for a service placement in the Harrisonburg community

What is Federal Work Study? • Work-Study is a need-based Federal subsidy program and part of the financial aid package • It offers students the opportunity to earn money through part-time employment to help defray educational costs • Employment positions in the program should help students gain experience in a field related to their course of study • Students gain valuable work experience, potentially reduce student loans and family contribution

  9. How does FWS work? • Eligible students are awarded a given amount of funding for the academic year • Jobs are highly competitive; students are selected on a first-come, first-served basis • FWS jobs are REAL jobs with duties and responsibilities just like a part-time position

  10. Alternative Break Program (ABP)

  11. Alternative Break Program Mission • The mission of ABP is to prepare the JMU community to be educated and enlightened citizens committed to positive social change by providing reflective experiential opportunities with diverse community partners

  12. What is ABP? • Opportunities to serve throughout the community, country, and world during Weekend, Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and May breaks • We perform direct service with non-profit organizations that address poverty, education reform, refugee resettlement, the environment, homelessness, health, community wellness, and more!

  13. Alternative Break Philosophy • Strong Direct Service, Orientation, Education, Training, Reflection • Reorientation, Diversity, Alcohol and Drug-Free, Simple Living
