  1. 2.6.1 eDNA Monitoring of the CAWS

  2. Introduction and Objectives • UND-USACE (cooperative agreement): eDNA as a monitoring tool to indicate genetic presence of bighead and silver carp DNA • July 2009 – May 2010 • Transition to USACE (independent sample, filtration, processing) • June – September 2010 • As part of MRRWG MRRP, eDNA linked to other actions • October – December 2010

  3. RCC Monitoring Battledrill Step 1 Step 3 Step 1: Illinois: Multi-Agency Sample Step 2: Illinois: USACE eDNA Filtering at EPA lab Step 3: Mississippi: Process eDNA at ERDC lab Step 4: ERDC eDNA Reports Step 5: MRRWG notified Step 6: Results posted online MRRWG eDNA sampling 2010 Strategy • 120 samples/week Priority areas (rotation): • Wilmette Station • Chicago Lock • O’Brien Lock Secondary areas (requested): • Lockport Pool (above/below Barrier) • Des Plaines River (Once/quarter) • Process • Samples collected • Samples filtered at EPA • Sample filtrate sent to ERDC overnight • Preliminary eDNA Results • Final Results • Posted to LRC website

  4. MRRWG Asian Carp eDNA Monitoring Results Above Barrier (2010) • Highlighted row shows most recent positive detection (12/7/2010) MRRWGAsian Carp eDNA Monitoring Results Below Barrier (2010) ALL 2010 SAMPLES PROCESSED AND REPORTED http://www.lrc.usace.army.mil/AsianCarp/eDNA.htm

  5. Future Plans • MRRP identifies eDNA as a useful tool to indicate genetic presence of bighead and silver carp in CAWS; • Latest draft of MRRP has eDNA as a tool to continue surveillance of AC DNA above Barriers; • Final strategy of eDNA as surveillance tool still not decided
