St. Louis • Founded in 1764 by Pierre Laclede, St. Louis was located in the territory owned by Spain and France prior to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. • St. Louis was the most important City in the West. The war brought much hardship and suffering to the City, even though the City was in involved directly as a scene to conflict. • The most unique aspect of St. Louis history was the separation between St. Louis County and St. Louis City that occurred in 1876.   10. Back to River Cairo, Illinois while the civil war was going on. Cairo is located in the southern most tip of Illinois, at the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. It wasn’t until sometime between 1835 and 1840 before the City of Cairo really came into its own, being established officially in 1855. The population of Cairo changed from 2000 to 2200, in 21 years. This place was one of the most important pieces of real estate in the country. Located at the tip of a peninsula, Cairo was surrounded by water on two sides: therefore a levee, some 15 feet high, was built around the city.
