  3. What is ESA? • Intergovernmental organisation dedicated to the management of important space projects • Creation in 1975 • Budget : about 3 billion euro provided by 18 Members states. Each state gives an amount and ESA has to invest this amount in companies of the country • 10 directorates split in 6 sites. EAC is a department of the directorate named Human Space Flight

What is EAC? • European Astronaut Center is an organisation created to: • Select and manage the European astronauts • Give the basic training (initial professional training afyer selection) • Train on the European elements of the International Space Station the international Astronauts going to the station • Support them in Space • About 100 people • Situated in cologne but why cologne: Currently 13 astronauts at EAC 7 have already flown but much more were trained at EAC

The functionning of EAC • Divided in 4 divisions: • -The AT (astronaut training) teaches to the astronauts how to live and work onboard the ISS (International Space Station) and practice the activities they will have to perform once in space. • -The AM (Medical support) takes care of the health of the astronauts before, during and after a flight and is working on new medical projects to improve medical care on the ISS,. • -The AA (Astronaut division) manages the astronauts, takes care of flight assignments, and implements all the logistic needed for supporting the everyday life of the astronauts and their families during mission training. They plan their travels, do the crew family support when the astronaut is in mission, communicate with the astronaut in space during a space mission (called Eurocom)etc. • -The AG (management of the company) • Why created EAC? • -To reinforce the European commitment to human space program
