What is The Odyssey? • Odyssey means “Great Journey.” It’s about Odysseus’ long journey home after fighting the Trojan war • One of the first great works of western literature • Stories recited by Homer, a blind, Greek poet, between (750 – 725 B.C.). Many different versions began to circulate. By 300 B.C. scholars began to work on a single authoritative version. 1. Homer also wrote The Iliad (a prequel to The Odyssey that focuses more on the war itself) • Stories that take place during the Trojan War (1200 B. C.)

  4. II. What is an Epic? (Primary Features) • Long • Narrative • Poem • About a hero

  5. III. Literary Terms • Epics Include an Epic Hero who • Possess superhuman strength and craftiness and confidence • embodies traits or virtues that a specific culture values (such as courage or honesty) • Deals with intervening gods and goddesses • Emerges victorious

  6. B. Archetypes 1. Archetypes are “types” of characters that are the same in different kinds of works. For example, the cruel monster or the brave hero. C. Invocation to the Muse 1. A special prayer for help from the goddess of creativity (“Muse”). Appears at beginning of epic

  7. D. Hubris–an enormous pride that is punished. EXAMPLE: Skippy wants to prove he is cool, so he challenges the meanest kid at school to a fight, but he gets beat up himself. E. Epithet—words that follow someone’s name EXAMPLE: Mr. Penn, teacher of the year and bodybuilder extraordinaire.

  8. F. ALLUSION • A reference to an older literary work. In The Odyssey, Homer alludes to Greek myths. G. EPIC SIMILE • A comparison between unlike things that continues for a few lines. H. FLASHBACK • When the story features a scene from earlier in time
