  2. Age of Exploration • The period of European exploration overseas from about 1400 to 1600.

  3. astrolabe an instrument, now replaced by the sextant, that was once used by mariners to determine the altitude of the sun or other celestial bodies. It helped determine latitude.

  4. Cape of Good Hope • The southern tip of Africa • The Portuguese tried to go around the Cape of Good Hope to reach India.

  5. caravel a light sailing ship with two or three masts, used in the Mediterranean from the 14th to the 17th centuries

  6. circumnavigate • To sail or fly completely around something, such as Earth. • Magellan’s crew was the first to circumnavigate the world.

  7. Florence, Genoa & Venice • Italian city-states where most of the significant achievements that came out of Renaissance. • It was in these northern cities that the environment of imagination and creativity and the generous spirit of patronage blossomed.

  8. gunpowder • an explosive mixture used in guns and blasting • It started the increase of new weaponry and changed the way countries wage war.

  9. Humanism An idea developed during the Renaissance that focused on the nature, ideals and achievements of human beings, rather than on the role Church in everyday life.

  16. Renaissance Man A cultured person who is knowledgeable, very skilled, talented and successful in a wide range of fields. Suleiman the Magnificent and Leonardo da Vinci could be considered Renaissance men.

  17. Strait of Magellan • The channel linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans near the tip of South America discovered by Magellan.
