  1. The Emily - 2009 Presentation of Finalists

  2. The 2009 Emily Committee: Ellen Watkins Pamela Stephens Jo Anne Banker Karen Burns Vicky Dreiling Kimber Frost Kira Kaefer Kay Hudson Sharon Mignerey Pat Rosen Sarah Schroeder Fleury Sommers

  3. Historical- Jo Anne Banker & Kay Hudson -Final Judges: Paige Wheeler, Folio Literary Management and Tessa Woodward, Avon

  4. 3: Vigilante’s Brideby Y.L. (Yvonne) HarrisSouthampton, New Jersey How the path of my writing career developed: Before I switched to fiction, I wrote business magazine articles and prided myself on clarity. The only fan letter I ever got was from a convict in the Georgia State Prison for an article I did on tax credits.  He never said what he was in for.

  5. 2: Hidden Beautyby Tiffany ChalmersCanada What about my characters inspired me: Jinan just sort of came at me so strong and in so much need of having her story told that she couldn't be ignored. It's easy for readers to empathize and feel the pain of her situation.

  6. 1: The Border Laird’s Brideby Allison WithersAustralia Why I entered the Emily: I entered the Emily to gain feedback from the American contest circuit. I'm absolutely thrilled to have made the finals in such a prestigious contest. Agent request from Paige Wheeler

  7. Paranormal- Pamela Stephens -Final Judges: Maura Kye-Casella, Denise Marcil Literary Agency and Allison Brandau, Berkley

  8. 6: Jinn and Tonicby Kay Hudson**Seabrook, Texas How the path of my writing career developed: I've been writing since I was ten, more of a marathon than a path.  Fiction is more fun than environmental impact reports, and I don't have to number the paragraphs. .

  9. 5: Carpe Diem by Pamela CallowHalifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Why this story spoke to me: I was fascinated with exploring how a modern lawyer contends with Life in Regency times while impersonating A noblewoman and saving the Napoleonic spy she loves from being hanged for treason...

  10. 4: Deyrolle by Lark Howard** Houston, Texas What about my characters inspired me: Cold rainy January day in Paris / townhouse full of taxidermy animals + gorgeous Frenchman who can bring them to life = inspiration for Deyrolle

  11. 3: Touch of Twilightby Clarissa EllisonGilbert, Arizona Why this story spoke to me:  With this story, I was able to combine my love of fairy tales with a little twisted dark fantasy. The result was unexpected, but that's the joy of writing.

  12. 2: Ghost Planetby Sharon FisherSeattle, Washington Agent request from Maura Kye-Casella Why this story spoke to me: I was fascinated by the idea of this smart, adventurous woman who finds herself irrevocably bound to a man who must turn his back on her.

  13. 1: Better Dead by Pamela Kopfler Houma, Louisiana Agent request from Maura Kye-Casella How the path of my writing career developed: Inch by inch.  I started with sprints; magazine, newspaper and television reporting. I conditioned for endurance by writing short stories.  Now, I'm running the marathon that is novel writing and pushing for the finish line. Publication.

  14. Series- Sharon Mignerey -Final Judges: Patti Steele-Perkins, Steele-Perkins Literary Agency and Patience Smith, Silhouette

  15. 5: The Lawman’s Babyby Lyn Wagner Eatontown, New Jersey Why I entered the Emily: I entered the Emily because it has such a fantastic reputation.  I belong to several chapters and the members have always talked highly about the Emily and the score sheets they get back.

  16. 4: Where There’s a Willby Kimberley WengerEphrata, Pennsylvania Why this story spoke to me:  In "real" life, I've been a professional pet sitter for 10 years.  I always wanted to use some of my weird adventures in a story.

  17. 3: This Child Is Mineby Jo Anne Banker**Houston, Texas What about my characters inspired me.  Characters always come to me first. I enjoy digging into their insidious backstory secrets, the events that shaped their emotional depths. Jenna was angry, Cade, almost too casually laid back. This story told me why.

  18. 2: Second Chance For a Familyby Kim GroomsLebanon, Tennessee Why this story spoke to me: We all know young dreams rarely work out as planned.  But what we get instead can be far richer and more humbling than anything ever imagined.

  19. 1: Witch Ever Way You Can by Deborah Blake Oneonta, New York Editor request from Patience Smith How the path of my writing career developed: I am published in nonfiction (books on Wicca/Llewellyn) but my protagonists are often Witches, so I guess youcould say I write about magic.

  20. Single Title- Pat Rosen & Kira Kaefer –Final Judges: Elizabeth Pomada, Larsen-Pomada Literary Agents and Kerry Donovan, NAL

  21. 6: Desperate Situations by Angela Abderhalden Meridan, Idaho Why this story spoke to me: This story was inspired by a photo of an Afghanistan vet who made a presentation at a writers meeting.  The story wrote itself

  22. 5: How Internet Dating Ruined My Life: A Love Storyby Vivi AndrewsSeattle, Washington Why did this story speak to me: Believe it or not, this story was inspired by my own bizarre misadventures with a certain online dating service which shall remain nameless.

  23. 4: Tuesday’s Childby Dale MayerKelowna, British Columbia, Canada Why this story spoke to me: Tuesday’s Child grew from a childhood nightmare.  But once sprouted, the idea demanded life, a voice, a purpose.  I could do nothing less than...surrender.

  24. 3: Kingdom on Fireby Yvonne Harris w/a Leslie LacosteSouthampton, New Jersey Why this story spoke to me: Oh, East is East, and West is West,And never the twain shall meet,       ... KiplingIn KINGDOM ON FIRE, they do. Two sworn enemies--one Soviet, one Afghan--secretly join together to save a woman they both love.

  25. 2: Something Old, Something New, Something Deadby Cher Gorman Highlands Ranch, Colorado Why I entered the Emily: I entered the Emily because of its stellar reputation and level of difficulty in finaling. I knew if I finaled the writing sings.

  26. 1: Missing by Christine Barth Baltimore, Maryland Editor request from Kerry Donovan Why this story spoke to me: MISSING's core is a love story, as the characters learn life isn't complete until you have someone to share it with, which I believe wholeheartedly.
