Salary & Education • The average annual income of a fashion photographer is $12,000 to $50,000 or more a year • Well-known and established photographers make in excess of $100,000 each year • Many fashion photographers have bachelor's degrees in photography. In school they learn about the techniques, processes and equipment used in the profession

Personal Qualities • A photographer should: • be creative, with a good eye for a picture • be reliable and able to meet deadlines • be motivated and determined • have excellent technical and photographic skills • have computer skills, especially with computer programs such as Photoshop • have good communications skills • be confident and organizing • be able to listen and interpret the client's needs • be able to focus on getting a good picture, no matter what is going on around them • have commercial awareness and be good at marketing themselves.

  4. Abilities • It depends a great deal on what kind of photographer you are thinking of. For example, social and fashion photographers (who mainly photograph people) have to have strong people skills. Nature photographers have to have a strong interest in wildlife and extraordinary patience. • Landscape photographers have be early risers- the best light is usually shortly after dawn. • Commercial photographers - who photograph objects for adverts - need strong attention to detail.

Duties • Gear maintenance and upkeep • Knowledge of a wide range of equipment • Budget/Pricing/Billing/Accounting • Location selection • Model selection • Lighting setup • Background selection/creation • Props • Supervision of assistants • Working with art directors/stylists/PR firms • Shooting the photo! • Supervising/performing post-processing • Customer service

Job Availability & Locations • Fashion photographer jobs are all over but if you want to do the big jobs for the top brands and magazines, you need to be in the cities where people look for such photographers. Cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. • To help fashion photographers with their career, they can get photo agents who connect photographers with clients and help to sell their photos. For an unknown photographer who doesn’t have any industry contacts, a good photo agent can help bridge that gap.
