  1. EMMA workshop (20-22/05/09)

  2. Workshop Aims (1) Identify & describe procedures for EMMA commissioning Help prepare programme of work Help develop online models where required Help interpret the data & measurements correctly Begin to lay out a commissioning plan Generate interest in active involvement in commissioning process Have an estimate of the available resources

  3. What should the bunch charge be ? 15, 30 and 60 pC How do we set Dx & D’x at the entrance of EMMA ? will need dedicated procedure to be looked at by me Do we need to run with 1 pC at all ? no Which model is the best / easiest to use as online model (ZGOUBI for now but wraparound will work on others) standard offline model ZGOUBI / MMCA / GPT / PTC / Scott / Shinji / FFEMMAG How do we crest / zero-cross cavities in the EMMA ring ? Tracking in ‘off-line’ models (e.g. Scott’s, GPT & others) to be benchmarked against each other for nominal parameters (at least) Some of the Questions Raised (1)

  4. Some of the Questions Raised (2)

  5. So we use ZGOUBI and link it with Kiril’s script or equivalent and develop online model What is the best way to zero the dispersion on exit of the EMMA ring ? Procedure to be developed by me Do we want to introduce collimators in a region of high dispersion ? where ? any other suggestions to reduce energy spread (first the need should be demonstrated) ? Look at ALICE injector to see what possible minimum energy spread is What data do we want displayed by the BPM signals ? Every turn or just one ? Both can be done Which BPMs are crucial ? we will only ‘card’ about half of them at first, so which are best ? tracking in off-line models should answer this Some of the Questions Raised (3)

  6. How do we change the frequency in the cavities while setting up the new phase automatically ? This should be possible (RF Group) Does this still hold if we change the energy ? Yes How is the best way to do orbit correction as we accelerate ? David Kelliher will look at this in detail as well as how to do orbit correction when some of the BPMs are missing What should be our first run ? ‘Muon experiment’ & demonstration of some acceleration – a detailed procedure should be written for this When can we claim victory ? When above has been achieved  Some of the Questions Raised (4)

  7. Collaborations (1) CERN (Eberhard Keil) John Adams Institute (Ken Peach, Holger Witte et al.) Imperial College (Jaroslav Pasternak, Morteza Aslaninejad et al.) RAL (Shinji Machida, David Kelliher et al.) TRIUMF (Shane Koscielniak et al.) BNL (Scott Berg) Fermilab (Carol Johnstone et al.) LPSC (François Meot) Liverpool University (Andy Wolski, Kai Hock et al.) Manchester University (Roger Barlow, Hywel Owen et al.) ... Apologies to anyone I have missed

  8. Next Steps (1) Update commissioning document Identify critical issues from workshop Project plan for EMMA commissioning preparation Deliverable Milestones Who can look into it, STFC, collaborators etc. Simulations to be carried out Online tools development Procedure writing Give this plan to collaborators for feedback & help Commissioning Plan Major tasks e.g. - Build online model with interface (ZGOUBI / PI-ZGOUBI) Already under way thanks to Yoel Giboudot, David Kelliher, Shinji, Machida, Kiril Marinov, Ben Shepherd

  9. Still lots of work to be done ! Expect requests for help soon ... Thanks to all the participants for making the workshop a success 
