VIDEO notes: The Life of Mark Twain out West

  • When the Civil War started in 1861, Twain went west to Nevada where his brother was working.
  • He tried prospecting for several months, but was unsuccessful, so he started writing for newspapers.

3. Bret Harte, in California, heard about his writing and offered him a job.

4. After challenging another editor to a duel, he had to leave the state.

5. He went to San Francisco to work on The Californian, Bret Harte’s newspaper.

slide5

While working in San Francisco, he often went on vacation to Angel’s Camp where a friend lived.

  • They often went to the tavern there to shoot pool.
  • In the tavern one day, a previous steamboat captain told Twain the story of the jumping frog.

9. Twain knew many of the men in the camp and identified with them because he had prospected for a while himself.

10. He undoubtedly saw them gambling, racing horses, etc. while he was there.
