Beats. Beats are often observed between two sounds with similar frequencies . A beat is distortion of the sound you hear when two different frequencies are aligned momentarily If the two frequencies are close enough, the sound will vary between loud and non-existent.

Beats • Beats are often observed between two sounds with similar frequencies. • A beat is distortion of the sound you hear when two different frequencies are aligned momentarily • If the two frequencies are close enough, the sound will vary between loud and non-existent. • The Beat Frequency that exists between two different sounds is the difference in their frequencies. • fbeat = |f1 - f2| • Occurs at all frequency ranges • Sound Clips of Beats: • 400 Hz & 401 Hz (fbeat = 1 Hz) • 400 Hz & 403 Hz (fbeat = 3 Hz) • 400 Hz & 410 Hz (fbeat = 10 Hz) • 400 Hz & 430 Hz (fbeat = 30 Hz) LOUD QUIET LOUD
