Bhebhe (the University Registrar), “University Structure and Policy Formulation”, pp.10-11. Then place yourselves within Grades 6 (Lecturer) - 3b (Professor). Consider why seniority is important vis-a-vis specific responsibilities of Deans of Schools/Faculties, Directors of Institutes/Centres and Department Chairpersons. Also consider what other attributes are important. olesHC/16.01.14

  8. FAMILIAR CAREER PATHS IN ACADEMIA: LANDMARKS AND PEAKS • Bachelor's Degree  Master’s Degree Doctorate  Higher Doctorate • Lecturer/Assistant Professor  Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor  Professor  Professor Emeritus • Subject Coordinator  Department Chair/Centre Director  Dean of Faculty/Institute Director  Pro Vice Chancellor/Deputy Vice Chancellor/Deputy President  Vice Chancellor/President** [**Excluding College level cluster & position of Provost]

  10. DISCUSSION COMBINING ACADEMIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP – the main challenge for most people]. Academic leadership covered in previous slides – the master key to the University’s core business of TEACHING, RESEARCH AND SERVICE. Administrative leadership – supported and complemented by other structures in the university system. General attributes – as in other sectors: refer to excerpts from survey by Industrial Psychology Consultants, “Why Employees Hate Their Bosses Survey Report” (2010). HC/16.01.14

  11. CONCLUSION A university is as good as its faculty members*. [i.e. academic staff] The interests of the department/ school/ faculty/ university* come first. [*i.e. the unit/organisation] “We are only as strong as our weakest link.” If each and every one of the Boards* of the Departments or Schools/Institutes functions well in letter and spirit, then the university runs smoothly, and it achieves its mission and the vision of the Vice Chancellor. [i.e. and all their committees] The university committee system* is designed to guarantee all of the above. [*it is key, especially at the operational level] HC/16.01.14
