  1. BELLWORK We’ve talked about Europe enough… What do you think is going on in America?

  2. Before We Start Today... • So many of you (including me) were enamored by the realism of the paintings from yesterday • Here is a very interesting video about realism and its lasting effect, even after the invention of photography: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os6i6fneV-E

  3. PLANNER: HOMEWORK Give me a paragraph about the differences and similarities between European and Early American art.

  4. Across the Pond 11-06-18

  5. Let’s Talk about Background... • In 1776, America declared their independence from Great Britain and the Revolution began • By 1788, the Constitution was ratified and America was a small and new country • What do you think happened to art, then? • What might have been important to the early Americans? • If we need a refresher on how the American Revolution started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eytc9ZaNWyc&t=58s

  6. Art During the Revolution • Art at this time was all about capturing the New Republic and the events that the new country was experiencing • Portraits were big, as well as paintings of scenes of battles • It was important to capture everything, especially during a time without photography

  7. Art During the Revolution • Please take notes on this video! • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdF189nWqxg • Many of the political figures of the Revolution were also artists • This is important to note when thinking about the fact that even artists want to fight for what’s right • Resistance Art, anyone?

  8. Art During the Revolution • Compared to the other art forms we have talked about, much of the art of the American Revolution was very much about the here and now • Artists were usually present at the scenes they painted, which meant that they were capturing the moment • How is this different from the other art that we have studied so far?

  9. Art During the Revolution • Why is it important to capture the scenes of the American Revolution? • Because it tells history! • Without this art, we would not quite understand the scope of the American Revolution in the same way • We might not also understand the figures of the American Revolution in the same way

  10. Just a Quick Observation...
